On behalf of the Chesapeake Conservancy, we are disappointed to read in the Times Leader that the beautiful and important Susquehanna River has returned to the list of the nation’s 10 most endangered rivers, this time placing as the nation’s third most endangered, as compiled by the nonprofit American Rivers.

The health of the Susquehanna River is not only vitally important to those who live and work in its watershed, but also to millions more – as this important tributary provides roughly 50 percent of the fresh water flowing into the Chesapeake Bay.

Our recent survey of nearly 1,000 area residents confirms that the health of the Susquehanna River is vitally important to those who live and work in its watershed. We must recognize the urgency of now, stand up for our beliefs and values, and get this river off the endangered list once and for all. We must learn from our Native American forefathers and friends and consider how decisions today will affect people and the environment seven generations from now.

We must act, vote, donate, volunteer and commit to achieving a state of harmony between people and the river.
