I am writing about the Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. company’s plans to erect an asphalt plant off Tomhicken Road in Sugarloaf Township and how it will affect not just that area but the region.

If you live in any of the municipalities surrounding Sugarloaf Township or frequently travel on Route 93, you will be impacted by the additional truck traffic that the plant will generate.

Those in proximity to the plant will surely be affected by the dust and fumes associated with manufacturing petroleum-based asphalt. The company has not provided a list of the chemicals, pollutants and substances that will be used.

Also, the plant itself is not new construction but is a structure that has been out of use for the last 8 to 15 years. The owner stated that he couldn’t remember how old the plant was, but that the age didn’t matter since technology for this kind of equipment hasn’t changed over the years. With technology leaping ahead in every field, his contention is hard to believe.

There are just too many unanswered questions that need to be explored. There is absolutely no doubt that introducing a heavy manufacturing enterprise near a residential area will change the essential character of Sugarloaf Township and surrounding communities. This venture could indeed threaten our health, safety and way of life.

Please do not welcome the asphalt plant into the area.
