Today marks the beginning of the National Volunteer Appreciation Week. And, while the Association for the Blind’s appreciation for our volunteers extends throughout the year, we feel there is no better time to express our true adoration for our volunteers than during this week.

Helen Keller once said “life is an exciting business, and most exciting when it is lived for others” – and while Helen is an inspiration in the work that we do at the Association, it is clear she also led the way in understanding the importance of volunteerism and serving others.

We live in a time where our lives continue to get busier by the day – and the gift of our time becomes more valuable. Yet, our volunteers tirelessly give to our organization through management roles and client support, which influence both the organization and the lives of all whom we serve.

Last week, five volunteers gave up their evening to bring some joy to our clients during our monthly bingo dinner – preparing the room, serving dinner, calling bingo numbers, helping clients participate in the game. It seems such a small thing, but it truly impacted all who attended.

We are also truly lucky to have many volunteers support our organization through preschool and kindergarten registration vision screenings. Each year, we identify hundreds of children’s vision issues, and we wouldn’t be able to do this without the support of many devoted community members.

This is the first of many special ‘thank yous’ planned for our volunteers throughout the week. And we invite you to not only go online to www.wilkesbarreblind.com to view the names of our wonderful volunteers – but also to become involved with the Association for the Blind. You can call 570-693-3555 or email us at [email protected] to find out more information.

Thank you again – to not only our volunteers but to all who give of their time selfishly to help those who need it.
