PITTSTON TWP. — Drivers anticipating the end of construction on Interstate 81 near the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport may have to wait until the spring or summer of 2016.The project, which also includes bridge rehabilitation and construction of an access road, was scheduled for completion in November 2015. But Paul Smith, the state Department of Transportation’s project manager, told the bi-county airport board Thursday there likely would be a delay, which means the original $42 million project cost probably would increase by $600,000 to $700,000.“We’re negotiating with the contractor,” Smith told the board. “The fill from the excavation lot is rockier than anticipated.”
