A new school year brings a variety of changes in districts across Luzerne County.A new attendance and truancy policy is in place for students going back to school in the Wyoming Valley West School District.“We are going to step it up and be aggressive,” Superintendent Charles Suppon said. The new policy is a response to increases in unexcused student absences, he said, adding the state Department of Education is holding local districts responsible for student absences. My first question to Dr. Suppon would be this: The department did not hold you accountable before?

Letter to the Editor: GOP lacking in keen leaders capable of making progress on nation’s big issues

A year ago, Republicans in Congress were demanding that the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) be defunded as a condition for not shutting down the government. In fact, every Republican member of the House of Representatives, except one, had signed on to this idea. Scott Rigell of Virginia was the only dissenter.
