Abington Heights first baseman Matt McDonald stretches to receive a pick-off attempt from pitcher Tyler Ksiazek during the Comets, 10-0, win over Lake-Lehman in the first round of the District 2 Class 3A baseball playoffs May 16.

SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — Tyler Ksiazek allowed one hit over four innings to lead third-seeded Abington Heights over 14-seed Lake-Lehman, 10-0, in five innings in the first round of the District 2 Class 3A baseball playoffs on Saturday.

First baseman Zach Brucher and shortstop Cahil Carey had the lone hits for the Black Knights.

Abington Heights struck for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Catcher Zach Campbell and third baseball Sam Arnold each had an RBI single. Center fielder Colin McCreary drove in two runs with a triple, and left fielder Eric Salerno scored on an error.

“Abington Heights is an extraordinarily well-coached team,” Lake-Lehman head coach Brian Gorski said. “They do everything the right way and we knew we would have to play a flawless game to beat Ksiazek. We had one or two bad innings and that was the story of our year.”

McCreary and first baseman Matt McDonald drove in runs in the bottom of the third to stretch the Comets lead to 7-0.

“When someone gets a hit, we just keep working and it sets a pace for the whole team,” McCreary said. “We just feed off of each other.”

Ksiazek, who walked three and struck out seven, issued two free passes in the top of the fourth innings before striking out second baseman Justus Cole and designated hitter Tommy Williams to end the threat after a visit to the mound by pitching coach Justin Stevens.

“I just needed to slow down my motions,” Ksiazek said. “It was really nice having the run support and great defense behind me. He told to throw the ball over the plate, the defense has our back.”

The Comets added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from second baseman Zach Spangenberg and RBI singles from Campbell and Arnold.

Abington Heights will host No. 11 seed Pittston Area on Tuesday.

In Saturday’s other Class 3A first-round game, freshman Jared Marshman pitched a five-hit shutout to lead the fifth-seeded Bulldogs.

Marshman also drove in the game’s only run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning that scored Zach Andress, who led off the frame with a triple.

Chase Nowak also went the distance for the No. 12 Crusaders, pitching a three-hitter. Nowak and Nick Cerep had two hits apiece.

Berwick moves on to face Valley View on the road in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.
