Clark Seymour grew up in a small town in Ontario, Canada, that presented a geographic challenge. Seymour’s hometown of Brockville is located on the St. Lawrence River, just across from the U.S. border and New York. So while Seymour is Canadian, the United States was an easy drive across the river. Further compounding the matter is language. Seymour grew up in an English-speaking town, but a short drive to the north was Ottawa, a city where French is common. So did Seymour identify more with the Canadian or American side of the border? French or English? Leafs or Senators?

We’ll let Seymour sort it all out.

Player: Clark Seymour

Hometown: Brockville, Ontario

Type: Small town

Population: 21,870

Distance from Wilkes-Barre: 277 miles

Being so close to the border, did you spend more time in the U.S. or Canada growing up? “I think more as my hometown being on the water. Not far from upstate New York and the Thousand Islands, which is a pretty nice place to be. But I do travel to Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto and Montreal in the summers. So it’s a little bit of every place.”

What kind of place is Brockville? “A smaller town but it has all you need – grocery stores and shopping. It’s nice to be away from the city, like Ottawa and Toronto. You have some privacy in the offseason.”

Leafs or Senators? “Senators for sure.”

What do you do for fun in Brockville? “A lot of golf. There’s a few golf courses around the area or sometimes I travel to play. Also just being around the water. Thousand Islands is a very peaceful place to be – boating and water sports are big. Get the workout done with, work a few hours for my dad to make some extra money and get on the water.”

What do you do for a job in the summer at Brockville? “My dad owns a trucking company. I’ll help the company out, usually in the warehouse unloading and loading trailers, washing trailers. I work with an older guy that is a jack-of-all-trades. I learn from him and help out the company. I’m planning on getting my commercial drivers license (CDL) in the next couple years to do small deliveries to Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. Try to creep my way into the business for a post-hockey career.”

With the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands nearby, do you fish? “We have our boat right across from Hay Bay. The islands and the fishing are really big up there. I’m trying to educate myself on it every year. We have the toys and the boats to do it with, we just don’t know how to do it. It’s always nice to go out there, grab some worms and try to catch some dinner.”

How are the winters in Brockville? “I was home for Christmas this year and it was the warmest one. But when I was a kid it used to freeze over and we made outdoor rinks. The shipping channel closed. They used to have ice breakers come through to break up the ice and keep the water flowing. It was fun to skate on the river.”

Would you like to move back to Brockville one day? “It’s always nice to go back and enjoy being at home. If I were to choose a place to settle down it would be around that area.”
