Nanticoke fell just short 36-33 in the nonleague match despite getting falls from David Jones (106), Megan Kocher (120), Domonick Souder (126), Garrett Allabaugh (152) and John Keefe (170) against Scranton Prep on Saturday.

Chris Maute added a wiin by decision for Nanticoke at 132.

Lehman claims WVC title

The Lake-Lehman junior high wrestling team crowned 16 medalists, including four champions to run away from the pack and claim the championship of the Wyoming Valley Conference junior high tournament on Saturday at Pittston Area High School.

The Black Knights scored 227 points to beat out second-place Tunkhannock (166.5), third-place Dallas (157) and fourth-place Coughlin (156.5).

Lehman’s four champions were Jack Dillon (75 pounds), Hunter Burke (100), Matt Galasso (130) and Josh Durling (250). Tunkhannock also dressed four champs in David Evans (90), Ethan Munley (95), Gavin D’Amato (110) and Dustin Henry (210).

Coughlin, Hazleton Area, Crestwood and Wyoming Area each produced two champs. For the Cougars, Beck Hutchison (80) and Charles Everdale (105) were winners, while Jordan Miale (115) and Pat Rother (155) were winners for the Comets. The Warriors’ Charlie Banashefski (122) and Corey Mruk (145) were first-place finishers. For the Crusaders, Joe Ammons (165) and Connor Lee (185) were gold medalists.

Also claiming gold were Wyoming Valley West’s Cadden Kucek (85) and Dallas’ Len Kelley (138).

The Tigers’ Evans (25-1) was named the event’s outstanding wrestler as the eighth-grader knocked off previously unbeaten and top-seeded Darren Clarke from Coughlin, 3-1 in the final.

Burke (21-0), a seventh-grader for Lehman, and D’Amato (24-0), an eighth-grader at Tunkhannock were the only wrestlers in the tournament to finish unbeaten.

Two other eighth-graders Lehman’s Galasso (21-1) and Coughlin’s Lee (24-1) ended with just one loss this season, while Black Knight freshman Durling completed his season with a mark of 21-1.

Hazleton Boys 2,754 Mifflin County 2,597

Zachary Bergensen led the Cougars with a 247 high game and a 622 series.

Teammate Gavin Lehman recorded a 214 high game and a 565 series, Tyler Herbinko with a 200 game and a 552 series, Brandon Updike earned a 214 high game and 524 series, Ryan Walker with a 170 high game and a 491 series.

Hazleton Girls 2,312 Mifflin County 1,933

The Cougars were led by Josie Middleton’s 211 high game and a 490 series.

Tabatha Kanuck finished with a 177 high game and 475 series, Jenna Rapach earned a 170 high game and 466 series, Meghan Lizbinski recorded a 162 high game and 451 series and Samantha Walsh finished with a 153 high game and a 430 series.
