The Wilkes men’s basketball team never recovered from a slow start on the road, losing 72-60 against Delaware Valley on Saturday as the regular season winds down.

With the loss, the Colonels (11-12, 6-6) are tied with Manhattanville for the fourth and final spot in the Freedom Conference tournament with two games left to play.

Against the Aggies, Wilkes fell behind 30-9 in the first half and trailed 42-26 at halftime. The Colonels got within five points at 64-59 with 2:13 to play but couldn’t rally all the way back.

Freshman Marcus Robinson finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Steve Stravinski followed with 13 points while Connor Evans had 10.

PSU Fayette 93,

PSU Wilkes-Barre 88

Christopher Cantine topped 30 points for the second straight night, but Penn State Wilkes-Barre couldn’t beat Penn State Fayette.

Five players scored in double figures for the Mountain Lions, who went 9-7 in PSUAC play.

LCCC 106, Montgomery 100

Leonard Radziak scored 29 points while Andre Coach and Jaleel Parlin finished with 22 points apiece for LCCC.

The Trailblazers are qualified for the NJCAA Region 19 playoffs.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Delaware Valley 77, Wilkes 45

The host Aggies controlled the game from start to finish to take down the Lady Colonels.

Catey McFadden scored 11 points to lead Wilkes.

PSU Fayette 65,

PSU Wilkes-Barre 56

Despite a loss, Penn State Wilkes-Barre finished the regular season as the No. 6 seed in the upcoming PSUAC tournament.

Deanna Thomas scored 14 points to lead the Lions (14-8, 7-7), who will likely play Penn State Lehigh Valley on Wednesday night at Cedar Crest College.

TRACK AND FIELD

Monarchs at Albright

Competing at the Albright College Invitational, King’s was led by freshman Jill Korgeski, who won the shot put (12.14). She took third in the weight throw.

The Lady Monarchs also took second, third and fourth in the mile. Ellen Kuzma and Brenna Smudde finished third and fourth in the high jump.

On the men’s side, Sean Doherty took second in the triple jump and Brandon Hampton was fourth in the 800.

Cougars at Susquehanna

Oniesha Clarke won both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash for the Misericordia women’s team at the Susquehanna University Invite on Friday.

Also recording wins were Bianca Bolton (mile), Sarah Wigg (weight throw) and Reilly Wagner (60-meter hurdles).

On the men’s side, both the 4×800-meter and the 4×400-meter relay teams took first. Jonathan Buck and Andrew Nelson won the 800-meter dash and 400-meter dash, respectively.

SWIMMING

Misericordia is in third place after the third day of competition at the MAC Championships, Saturday in York.

Marissa Gombosi finished second in the 100 back while Dani Blass was second in the 400 IM. Morgan Hanadel set a school record while finishing fifth in the 200 free while Rachel Finnegan and Kerri Ciriello were sixth and ninth, respectively.

Taylor Grenier was eighth in the 100 fly and Finnegan was ninth in the 100 back.

Hanadel, Kelsey Lyter, Grenier and Finnegan were third in the 200 free relay.

Misericordia has 277 points and trails Messiah and Widener in the 12-team field heading into the final day.

King’s in 7th, 8th place

King’s remained in seventh and eighth-place, respectively after the third day of the MAC Championships.

The Lady Monarchs have accumulated 135 points while the men have posted 131 points.

In the women’s 200-freestyle relay King’s team of Rachel Jonas, Melina Good, Hannah Oney, and Mikayla Miller placed seventh with a new school-record time of 1:44.25.

In the men’s 200-freestyle relay, the Monarch team of Bryce Groshardt, Josh Shoemaker, Aaron Griffith, and Randill DeAsis place seventh with a 1:30.25.

In the women’s 400-individual medley, Brigid Wynn was eighth with a 4:58.75.

In the men’s 400 individual medley Griffith set a new school-record in preliminaries with a time of 4:21.62, bettering the previous mark of 4:27.16 by former Monarch great Petr Novak in 1996. Novak was the named the MAC’s outstanding male swimmer in 1998. In the finals he placed seventh with a time of 4:22.88.

In the men’s 100-backstroke, Groshart placed seventh with a time of 54.60.

MU’s Grzech nabs runner-up

Joe Grzech had a pair of runner-up finishes to lead the Misericordia on the third day of the MAC Championships.

Grzech was second in the 200 free and 100 back and Tom Scott was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke as the Cougars ended the day in fifth place in the 12-team field.

Pat O’Dell finished third in the 400 IM while Matt Cullen, Bobby Jacobs, Nick Lucca and Grzech finished third in the 200 free relay.

MU has 264 points and is just eight points out of third place behind Arcadia and Messiah.

TENNIS

Wilkes wraps up Day 1 at Invy

Wilkes opened its 2016 spring campaign competing at the Ranger Invitational hosted by Drew University Saturday afternoon.

In singles action, Courtney Murphy recorded a pair of victories including a 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 win over Lucas Bocaletto of Chestnut Hill College. Troy Haas also picked up a singles win against CHC winning 6-3, 6-4 over Henry Boyle. Artyom Nabokin went 9-8 (7-2) to secure the final Wilkes singles win against CHC.

Wilkes went a perfect 10-0 in singles play against Roger Williams later in the day. The Colonels recived straight set wins from Murphy, Max Appello, Adam Lefkandinos, Michael Kranz, Haas, Brian Murray, Nabokin, Andrew Neidig, Collin Strunk and Jonathan White.

In doubles competition, Appello and Kranz recorded an 8-6 victory over CHC.
