NORFOLK, Va. — Friday was just another normal day at the office for Chad Green.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre right-hander tossed seven shutout innings as he went at least six innings for the sixth time this season, and the fifth time in a row, leading the RailRiders to a 4-0 victory over Norfolk at Harbor Park.
Green (4-3) struck out six and allowed the only four hits the Tides had on the night, but two of them came in the first inning. After that frame, Green allowed one more hit in the third before retiring 11 in a row. The only other he allowed came when former RailRider Corban Joseph singled with one out in the seventh.
The RailRiders, who improved their International League-leading record to 28-21, got Green enough support in the top of the third inning when Ben Gamel (3 for 5) slammed a two-run homer giving the team a 2-0 advantage against the Tides, who have the worst record in the league at 17-32.
Jake Cave (1 for 4) scored on a groundout by Deibinson Romero in the fourth inning extending the lead to 3-0.
Gamel crossed the plate a Norfolk an error in the fifth inning for the team’s final run. Donovan Solano and Pete Kozma had two hits each for the RailRiders.
Game 2 of the three-game set in Norfolk between the teams is Saturday night at 7:05 with SWB lefty Tyler Webb (1-0, 1.93) making his first career start and squaring off against Norfolk RHP Joe Gunkel (1-2, 4.67).
