Maddisyn Antal homered to lead a big night at the plate for Greater Pittston, beating Nanticoke 13-3 on Wednesday to win the District 16 Little League junior softball title.

Everyone in Greater Pittston’s lineup recorded at least one hit in the victory while Tinsley Sarnak (five innings) and Kylie Herbert split pitching duties.

Katie King had two hits for Nanticoke while Jess Skladzien added one.

DISTRICT 31

JUNIOR SOFTBALL

Northwest 9,

Kingston/Forty Fort 3

Hunter Kline had a home run as seven different Northwest players recorded a hit to win the District 31 championship.

Brenna Babcock (triple), Courtney Cragle (double) and Nikki Cragle (double) also had extra-base hits while Aleigha Parnell pitched six shutout innings and struck out five for the win.

LEGION

Swoyersville 4,

Tunkhannock 3

Zach Sott came through with a walk-off RBI single as Swoyersville scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to rally past Tunkhannock. Pat Adamski had tied the game earlier in the frame with a run-scoring single of his own.

Adamski, Dominick Bayo (triple, RBI) and Jake Packer (double) all had two hits. Damian Davies went the distance for the win.

Connor Hulslander tripled and drove in a run for Tunkhannock.

Hazleton 8, Nanticoke 3

Jarod Paisley struck out seven in a complete-game victory while going 2 for 3 with an RBI at the plate. Hazleton drew nine walks and scored four runs in the top of the fourth to break open a close game.

Jake Peters finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and a triple to lead Nanticoke.

COLLEGES

MAC academic honors

The MAC announced its all-academic selections for spring sports on Wednesday with 25 student-athletes from local schools being recognized.

Those honored were chosen on a 50-50 balance for academics and athletics with a minimum 3.20 GPA required for consideration.

King’s had 11 for the spring, with five hailing from the Wyoming Valley Conference — Coughlin’s Shamus Gartley and Ryan Tracy (golf); Holy Redeemer’s Marissa Durako and Lake-Lehman’s Cayle Spencer (track and field); and Wyoming Seminary’s George Parkhurst (tennis).

Out of Misericordia’s eight selections, Amy Viti (Hanover Area, track), Bianca Bolton (Pittston Area, track) and Tyler McGarry (Pittston Area, golf) were WVC alums.

Wilkes’ Joe Champi (Pittston Area, baseball) was among the Colonels’ five spring honorees.
