NANTICOKE — After a game filled with mistakes followed by fast recoveries had continued through a full overtime, nobody walked away as a winner.

But considering where both Berwick and Nanticoke came from, neither felt as if there was much lost, either.

And while both teams finished in a 1-1 tie at Nanticoke Park, it seemed reason enough for each to celebrate Wednesday.

“I think we’re still building,” first-year Berwick coach Amy Daniel said. “Every game, we’re getting better and better.”

The even score may actually help her playoff-bound Bulldogs move up a spot in the postseason seedings.

Now at 4-6-1, Berwick currently sits in seventh place in the District 2 Class A playoff standings, a spot above 4-8 Wyoming Area and just behind current No. 6 seed Hanover Area (5-5). If Berwick can win its regular season finale against Northwest on Monday, and Hanover Area fails to beat either Holy Redeemer or Meyers, the Bulldogs would finish as the district’s sixth seed. That woulod earn them a probable date with Wyoming Seminary in a playoff opener.

“I think they’re excited about playoffs,” Daniel said of her girls.

And why not?

The Bulldogs were 0-10 last season, after a 3-7 finish in 2014.

“When they won that first game, it was like winning a state championship,” said Daniel, who won two Class 2A state titles as a player for powerful Crestwood in 2003 and 2004. “Last year, they didn’t win a single game. Every team in the playoffs is going to be a challenge. I want them to play a (WVC) Division 1 school, for the experience.”

Nanticoke won’t get there this year.

But the 1-9-1 Trojans have made marked progress under their own first-year head coach, Sarah George.

“They definitely improved greatly as the season went on,” George said. “Today proved to us how much they did.”

In fact, stubborn Nanticoke scored the game’s first goal, when Amanda Margalski took a pass from Abby Kotech and rolled the ball into the cage with 9:01 to play in the first half.

“Every game, we’re trying to improve a little more,” George said.

It took less than two minutes for the Bulldogs to prove why they clinched a postseason berth late last week.

Exenia Demko corralled a hard pass from Sammi Starr and chipped home the tying goal 7:21 before halftime, moments after some inspiring words from Daniel.

“I called the timeout, went over a couple of things,” Daniel said. “I just said I’d like to see them go out and try to get one back as soon as we can.”

From there, neither offense got much going during the second half and through regulation.

And when they did, Berwick goalie Becca Decker stopped 10 shots, while Nanticoke’s Jill Maute made five saves in the cage.

“We fought through,” Daniel said, “we found a way, and we’ll take the tie.”
