KINGSTON — After dominating the first half of play and going into the locker room up 14-3, Wyoming Seminary was held scoreless the rest of the way and fell Kiski School, 19-14, on Saturday afternoon.
“This was a tough one,” Blue Knights head coach Kevin Kelly said. “We’ve been struggling all season and we just didn’t get it done in the second half. The bottom line is we had the chance to make some plays and we just didn’t get it done at the end.”
The Blue Knights got off to a hot start when junior tailback, Daeshaun Jupiter-Deane, scampered into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown run just two and a half minutes into the game.
After Kiski’s junior kicker, Michael Bobak, trimmed the Blue Knights’ lead to 7-3 on a 24-yard field goal. Wyoming Seminary came right back when senior lineman Kyree Campbell blocked the Cougars’ punt and put the Blue Knights on the 11-yard line in enemy territory.
On the very next play, Wyoming Seminary senior running back Abdoulaye Konate raced to the end zone on a 11-yard touchdown run to give his team a 14-3 advantage.
But Wyoming Seminary’s first-half jubilation would be short-lived. Kiski quarterback Omar Ward’s 26-yard touchdown run cut the deficit to 14-10 with 2:43 left in the third quarter.
Ward later connected on a 18-yard bomb to Joshua Kreibel to give the Cougars a 17-14 lead.
The Blue Knights’ fourth-quarter comeback attempts came up short and Kiski tacked on a 2-point safety with only 5:43 left in regulation for a little cushion.
Wyoming Seminary quarterback Jared Piatnik led one last comeback drive late in the fourth quarter after connecting with Jupiter-Deane on a 38-yard pass down the sideline to get into Kiski territory. But the drive stalled and the Blue Knights turned the ball over on downs.
“I’m lost for words right now, I feel terrible for the kids,” Kelly said. “I really wanted to see them win that game, but it just didn’t happen.”
Now coach Kelly’s 0-6 squad will try to get into the win column next week when they hit the road to take on Perkiomen next Saturday, before wrapping up the season with one last home game against Canterbury the following weekend.
