It takes a lot of fuel to power through a 60-minute hockey game. Constant skating alone burns countless calories, and players have become increasingly attuned to what they eat as a major part of their daily training regiment. Hockey players are as particular about their meals as they are their sticks.
Ever wonder about what keeps a hockey player going during a long, grueling season? Each week we’ll take a look at what’s on a player’s plate after practice and before a game.

Pregame meal: “Carbs. Pasta or rice and protein like chicken and vegetables. Most guys are pasta or rice and chicken.”
Preferred meal on non-game days: “I try to switch it up. A lot of fish, like salmon. Red meat just once a week. We get breakfast and lunch here so we don’t have to do too much cooking.”
Foods to avoid: “Not too much. We’re so busy and burning so many calories every day. Not chips. Pizza or ice cream now and then is OK.”
Cheat meal: “Grilled cheese is my favorite. On an off day I’m good for two grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. I switch it up a lot with muenster or Swiss cheese. That’s probably my favorite meal.”
Favorite meal from back home: “Half of a mile from my house there’s a really good sushi place in Minneapolis. From 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday’s they have a happy hour and you can get half-off rolls, so me and the boys go there and munch some rolls down.”
