Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin (center) replaced Ryne Sandberg after he abruptly resigned on Friday.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies say Pete Mackanin will stay as their manager for the rest of the season.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. made the announcement Tuesday.

Mackanin took over on an interim basis last Friday after manager Ryne Sandberg resigned.

“It’s a good feeling,” Mackanin said. “I’m happy that I know what my fate is until the end of the season.”

At 27-51, the Phillies had the worst record in the majors going into Tuesday night’s home game against Milwaukee. His goal is to try to develop Philadelphia’s young players.

“I’m just going to continue to try to develop them as much as possible and try to get them to where we think they can be and move on to the future,” he said.

This is Mackanin’s third stint as an interim manager after working in a similar role previously with the Reds and Pirates.

The Phillies also added Jorge Velandia to their coaching staff.

Sandberg left three days before the Phillies introduced Andy MacPhail as the team’s president in waiting.

MacPhail will spend the next three months evaluating the organization before replacing Pat Gillick, who helped pick him.

The status of Amaro, who’s in the last year of his contract, remains uncertain. Same for Mackanin.

“I think it’s pretty clear this does not necessarily mean that he’s a candidate to take the job beyond the year by any stretch of the imagination,” Amaro said. “I think we’re going to have basically a clean slate to make that decision. Pete may or may not be part of that decision making process and Pete understands that.”

Nationals 6, Braves 1

ATLANTA — Jordan Zimmermann took a shutout into the eighth inning and Washington beat Atlanta to continue the season-long dominance of the division rivalry.

The NL East-leading Nationals have won nine straight games in the season series with the Braves — including a three-game sweep at Washington last week. Zimmermann (6-5) ended a streak of three losses since his last win on June 2.

Cubs 1, Mets 0

NEW YORK — Kyle Hendricks outpitched Jonathon Niese in a matchup of feeble offenses, and Matt Szczur provided the one big hit as Chicago snapped a five-game skid with a victory over New York.

Hendricks (3-4) pitched three-hit ball for six innings and combined with three relievers to bail out the Cubs, who scored just six runs during their losing streak.

Marlins 5, Giants 3

MIAMI — Major league batting leader Dee Gordon hit the first inside-the-park homer in the four-year history of Marlins Park, and the three-run shot helped Miami beat San Francisco.

Miami’s Justin Bour also homered, giving a welcome jolt of power to a team without injured slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Buster Posey hit his 12th homer for the Giants.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Astros 4, Royals 0

HOUSTON — Dallas Keuchel allowed seven hits in eight innings to lead Houston to a win over Kansas City.

Keuchel (10-3) struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter to lower his ERA to 2.03. Pat Neshek allowed one hit in the ninth. George Springer had a two-run homer in the third inning. Jose Altuve drove in a run in the fifth to help Houston to the victory.

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO — David Ortiz and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit solo home runs, Eduardo Rodriguez pitched six solid innings and Boston beat Toronto for a third straight win.

The Red Sox matched their longest winning streak of the season. Rodriguez (4-2) gave up one run and four hits in six innings, slowing down the top-scoring team in the majors.

Indians 6, Rays 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Danny Salazar pitched two-hit ball for 7 2-3 innings and Cleveland backed him with three home runs to beat Tampa Bay.

Jason Kipnis, Giovanny Urshela and David Murphy homered for the Indians, driving in all six runs. Salazar (7-3) retired the first 15 batters, the third time in the last six games that’s happened to the Rays.

Rangers 8, Orioles 6

BALTIMORE — Mitch Moreland hit two home runs in a second straight game, and Texas celebrated the return of Josh Hamilton by defeating Baltimore.

Shin-Soo Choo and Robinson Chirinos also went deep for the Rangers, who have hit eight home runs in the first two games of the series. Moreland homered with a man on in the second and eighth innings.
