WILKES-BARRE — The formula sounds simple enough.

Meyers has once again opened the season with a sub-2.00 team ERA, and the Mohawks are playing some opportunistic baseball.

“We’re just trying to hit zones, keep hitters off-balance, throw to contact, have the hitters put the ball in play and have the fielders make plays,” Meyers coach Matt Skrepenak said. “Fundamental baseball.”

There has, of course, been some drama.

Monday’s 3-2 win over Wyoming Seminary kept the Mohawks unbeaten in WVC play at 5-0. Four of those wins have now come by one run — a trio of 3-2 victories to go with a 4-3 win.

In the one game that wasn’t decided by just a run — an 11-5 triumph — Meyers trailed heading into the bottom of the sixth before breaking out for the win.

Each time, the Mohawks have found a way to win.

On Monday, it was an early 2-0 hole and a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the fifth. But with two outs, Colin Pasone lifted a high shot to left that fell in for an RBI triple that tied the game. Not long after, the senior would come home to score the winning run on a passed ball.

Kenny Macko hit an RBI single in the second, but his best work came on the mound.

Macko got all but the final out of the game, scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run and one walk. Senior Ryan Gilgallon came on to face the final batter, getting a strikeout with the tying run on second to pick up the save.

Gilgallon and Macko are picking up where they left off from last season’s strong pitching performances.

“They have years,” Skrepenak said. “Ryan, this is his fourth year with us. This is Kenny’s third year with us. They have that experience, which is really valuable. So they’ve been in these situations. They handle it well.”

Wyoming Seminary (3-2) has shown a spark at the plate in the first few weeks of the season, and the Blue Knights struck first in this one.

Freshman Yudai Kachi (2 for 3) lined an RBI single. A throwing error later brought home Justin Negron for a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.

Todd Phillips tripled with one out in the fourth, but the Mohawks escaped the jam.

“It was a very competitive game,” Knights coach Brian Kaschak said. “Hats off to Meyers. They played a good game, and they didn’t really give us anything. They made us earn everything, and we just couldn’t quite earn enough.”

The Royals scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up, but the visiting Hawkeyes (2-2) answered with the winner in the top of the seventh. Matt Clarke (double), Kyle Kowalski (double, RBI) and Sean Hart (two RBI) all had two hits apiece.

Tom Borum and Cade Flanley both finished with two hits and two RBI for the Royals (3-2).
