The Wilkes-Barre Chapter of UNICO has permanently named the most valuable player trophy given out at the UNICO Charity Football Game in honor of coach George Curry.

The first George Curry Most Valuable Player Award will be presented Saturday after the game. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Wyoming Area’s stadium in West Pittston. The MVP will be selected by members of the media and UNICO.

Curry retired last Friday after the District 2 Class 3A championship game loss to Scranton Prep. He finished his 46-year coaching career with 455 victories, most among Pennsylvania high school football coaches. His six state titles ties him with Southern Columbia’s Jim Roth. His Berwick teams also won three national championships awarded by USA Today.

Curry graduated from Larksville High School in 1962 and went on to play linebacker and nose guard at Temple University. He started his coaching career in 1967 at Lake-Lehman before moving to Berwick in 1971. He retired from Berwick after the 2005 season, but resurfaced the next year at Wyoming Valley West.

After three years at Wyoming Valley West, Curry retired again and did some television work. He came back to Berwick in 2012 and his Berwick teams appeared in four consecutive D2-3A championship games, winning the title in 2013.
