HONESDALE — Coughlin cruised to a 49-13 nonconference victory over Honesdale Friday night .

On just the second play from scrimmage, junior Vincent Todd gave Crusaders’ fans a show as he blazed down the sideline on a 70-yard sweep untouched to set the tone for the night.

By his third carry, Vincent had almost 100 yards on the night.

“We have a lot of young kids playing, and we had a hard week of practice. We ran the ball very well today and we threw the ball when we had to,” Coughlin head coach Ciro Cinti said. “We just can’t have any more mental mistakes like before half.”

After a Honesdale three-and-out, Sovan capped an 11-play drive on Coughlin’s next possession with a 1-yard dive to pay dirt and a 14-0 lead for Coughlin (3-2).

The Crusaders outgained the Hornets 322-207 in total yards.

“We didn’t really get into the routine that we wanted because we were subbing guys in and out a lot tonight,” Cinti said. “We won the game, that’s all that matters. We didn’t play with our starting tailback today. He’ll be back next week ready for Berwick.”

Coughlin senior Taylor Chronowski caught up to the quarterback from behind for a sack two plays later to set up another Coughlin score from senior defensive lineman Paul Marinko with 3:17 left in the first quarter.

Stating at their own 14, the Hornets signal caller found himself sandwiched by two Crusaders in his backfield and the resulting fumble was pounced on in the end zone by Marinko hustling to the ball.

Honesdale came out marching solid on the next drive, running the ball 8 times for 49 yards into Crusader territory only to see things stall when the snap was botched on fourth down in shotgun to turnover on downs.

Four plays later Coughlin capitalized as Todd hauled in a nicely thrown pass from senior quarterback Kevin Kozerski down the sideline to make it 28-0.

“I thought Kozerski played a good game today and I thought our line played well,” Cinti said. “A good team effort.”

Another four plays later, Sovan stepped in front of a slant pattern for a pick-six and his second score of the night, this time from his linebacker position.

Honesdale came out on the next drive with three straight completions only to be intercepted two plays later. They got the ball back around midfield as the Coughlin defender fumbled. The Hornets’ Carroll scored from 12 yards out on a keeper to make it 35-7.

Sovan chalked up another score with 42 seconds left before going into the locker room 42-7.

The second half saw the Hornets lob a 40-yard score with 27 seconds left in the third and then Coughlin returned the favor on a 42-yard run in the fourth to end the game 49-13.
