HAZLE TWP. — The Nanticoke softball team was all dressed up with nowhere to go Monday.

The Trojanettes were getting set to board a bus for a game at Hazleton Area that day, only to have it postponed due to the threat of some nasty weather. Instead, they made the trip Wednesday and brought a storm with them.

Jenna Lipowski had a homer as part of her four-hit day, Cassie Novakowski slammed a three-run homer and Nanticoke pounded out 13 hits as it defeated Hazleton Area 7-0 in a battle of teams unbeaten in Wyoming Valley Conference play.

“We were really looking forward to this game and to come out and do our best,” Lipowski said, “but it got canceled. There was nothing you can do, but we came back today and put on a show.”

The show included ending a 29-game WVC regular-season win streak by Hazleton Area (7-1 Div. 1). The Cougars’ last WVC loss was 7-3 to Nanticoke on April 24, 2015. While the loss ended the streak, it did little to hurt Hazleton Area’s Division 1 first-place status as the Cougars remained comfortably ahead of second-place Pittston Area (4-4).

“We have profound respect for their program and their head coach and the players on their team,” Nanticoke coach Ryan Stetz said. “And we’re really confident in our girls as well. They’re tough Nanticoke kids who seem to rise to the occasion. There’s something special going on this year.”

Meanwhile, Nanticoke (8-0) upped its lead over second-place Tunkhannock (5-3) in Division 2.

Brittany Sobeck and Lipowski started things with consecutive singles to open the game. Sobeck came around to score on Novakowski’s single to right. Lipowski knocked in Megan Murphy, who had singled, to make it 2-0 in the second inning.

Nanticoke increased the advantage to 4-0 in the fourth. Lipowski blasted a solo homer to second and Kiera Brown added an RBI triple to right a batter later.

Novakowski, who twice was hit with pitches, got some revenge in the sixth with a three-run homer to left for Nanticoke’s final runs.

Seven runs were more than enough for pitcher Miranda Bohn. The junior lefty retired the side in order three times and had just two Hazleton Area base runners to reach second base. She allowed consecutive Cougars to reach base once when Erika Book and Tiana Treon hit consecutive one-out singles in the fifth.

Hazleton Area finished with four hits from a lineup that featured seven starters hitting .350 or better. Bohn pitched a perfect game last week against winless Coughlin, but thought she threw better Wednesday.

“I definitely think so,” Bohn said. “I had a lot of control of my pitches and really trusted the defense behind me today. I knew this would be one of the toughest games we had with both undefeated, so I knew I had to come out and do my job and let the team do the rest.”

Hazleton Area has lost two in a row counting a 6-5 non-conference loss to Easton on Tuesday. The Cougars play a third game in as many days when they host Crestwood on Thursday.

“It’s nice to see good pitching like that. Miranda is a very good pitcher,” Hazleton Area coach Heather Natt said. “But we have to learn to adjust. We didn’t see that kind of pitching (against Easton), so it was a big challenge for us today.”
