WRIGHT TWP. — Berwick will certainly be a huge underdog come Friday against undefeated Nanticoke.

The Dawgs, though, will certainly remember how they made it to that District 2 Class 4A softball quarterfinal game because Tuesday’s 7-5 first-round victory over Crestwood was quite memorable.

Berwick tacked on two runs in the seventh on a pair of ground-rule doubles despite having two players called out for getting hit with batted balls in the inning. The bottom of the frame was unforgettable as well. Crestwood loaded the bases with no outs, but Berwick center fielder Lydia Hess completed a double play by throwing out a runner at the plate after catching a flyball. And pitcher Kylie Levan recorded a save after being the starting pitcher.

Ninth-seeded Berwick (3-11) heads to top-seeded Nanticoke (13-0) for a 4:30 p.m. game Friday. Nanticoke won the regular-season meetings 4-1 and 4-0.

“We’ve played a lot of the top teams in the league close,” Berwick coach Emily Johnson said. “We’ve played Tunkhannock and Nanticoke close. The team we have doesn’t reflect our record.”

Berwick took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Brooke Stout and an RBI single by Hess.

Alexis Zalutko then started the Berwick seventh by reaching base when her routine infield pop was dropped. After Mallory Pinterich was called out when her bunt hit her outside the batter’s box, Sammi Starr ripped a double down the right-field line.

Zalutko would have scored easily except the outfield fence extends only as far as the foul line. Starr’s hit sliced around it for a ground-rule double, forcing Zalutko to halt at third. Shea Petty followed with a walk, but was called out when a grounder by Levan hit her while running to second. Berwick finally got two runs across when Stout’s drive to center snuck under the fence for another ground-rule double and a 7-4 lead.

Crestwood (4-10) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh on a hit batter and two walks, the latter by Levan after took over for reliever Emma Stoker. The double play on Hess’ catch-and-throw recorded two outs before Sydney Sobolewski scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 7-5. Berwick finally got the final out and that was a bit of an adventure as second baseman Sarah Dent bobbled the grounder.

Levan pitched the first 4.1 innings and then came in for the final three outs to get the save.

“It was probably the first time I’ve ever done that,” Levan said. “It’s tough because your arm gets slowed down and you have to come back in and warm it up. It’s definitely tough on your arm.”

Sobolewski launched a three-run homer to left in the third inning to tie the score 3-3. The Crestwood offense, though, was top heavy with all six hits and five runs coming from the top four Comets in the batting order. The defense had some shaky moments as well as six of Berwick’s runs were unearned.

“Errors killed us and we left way too many runners on base,” Crestwood coach Adrienne Bannon said.
