FRANKLIN CUNNINGHAM

School: Hazleton Area

Year: Junior

Sport, position: cross country

Family: Daniel, dad

Last week: At the District 2-4 Class 3A subregional cross country championships last Wednesday, Cunningham finished in fourth place with a time of 17:02.74. The time was good enough to qualify the junior for this third straight trip to the PIAA Championships at Hershey on Nov. 5.

What he says: “Mainly hard work everyday at practice. A lot of positive thoughts. Can’t be negative walking into a race, being negative means you’re going to lose from the beginning. … (I approached districts) like just another race. I knew I had to give it my all. Past experience helped out a lot. I knew what it was like being there two years in a row. … I think I’m ready for states. I’m always ready for states.”

Coach says: “He ran a very good race. He ran a smart and did what he had to do to make it to states. This will be his third time. He was there as a freshman as a team and went there last year (as an individual runner) with Matt Houser.” — Joseph Smolinski, Hazleton Area head cross country coach.
