Year: Freshman

Sport, position: Basketball, center

Family: Annette, mom; Ken, dad; Corey, brother

Last week: Hodick scored 16 points in Pittston Area’s 70-59 overtime loss to Hazleton Area last Monday. She and her squad rebounded on Thursday with a 46-42 win over Wyoming Valley West. In that game, the 6-foot freshman scored 24 points and was 6 for 7 from the free-throw line.

What she says: “I work a lot to get open, but my teammates, when I get hot they always look to give me the ball. They really just look for me and I am able to get open and score.”

Coach says: “I think just finding better angles on the court and using her size to get in good position (has been the key to success). Plus her teammates being such good shooters opens up the inside for her as well” — head coach Kathy Healey

School: Wyoming Seminary

Year: Freshman

Sport, position: Wrestling

Family: Marlo, mom; Frank, dad; Alex, brother; Frank, brother; Marcelo, brother; Marrisa, sister; Monique, sister; Felcia, sister; Alexis, sister.

Last week: Tied 27-27 with the No. 1 wrestling team in the country (based on Intermat rankings), Blair Academy, the Blue Knights turned to the freshman to win it all. Martinez did just that, recording an 11-2 major decision over Blair’s Anthony DeMartino at 145 to give No. 10 Wyoming Seminary a 31-27 upset victory last Friday.

What he says: “My coaches told me to focus on my match and try to block out all the excitement or I’d get distracted and not focus on my match. … I had to focus on what I was going to do and not allow him (my opponent) to do what he wanted to do.”

Coach says: “He’s a freshman, but he’s obviously got a lot of experience and we were very confident when we saw the match was going to come down to him. We knew from his performance this year that he was ready to compete at a high level. We moved him to that weight class (145) for that dual meet. … He’s been competing at 138 for most of the year. … It’s nice that worked out and that he got to take it into his own hands.” — head coach Scott Green
