DALLAS TWP. — By the time they were done winning Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2 titles, then posting a school-best, seventh-place finish in the state in Class 2A, the Dallas girls swimming team had established school records in seven of 12 events last season.

Abby Zolner made sure the rewriting of the record book started early this season.

Zolner, who finished her freshman season with two individual school records and a part of two record relay teams, continued to show off her versatility in the pool during Wednesday’s season-opening, 138-47 Wyoming Valley Conference victory over Lake-Lehman.

When Zolner finished the 500-yard freestyle in 5:34.44, she took 28-hundredths of a second off the school mark, set by Kasia Szulborski in 2008.

“I was thinking of that time the whole entire time – 5:34.72 – that’s the previous time,” Zolner said. “The first thing, I was really scared to look up at the board. I waited a second, then I looked up at it and it was point-three (below) the record.

“I wanted to jump, but I didn’t have the energy.”

Zolner already owned school records in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly as well as a piece of the records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

“That was what I wanted (Tuesday) when we found out the lineup,” said Zolner, who earned two state medals in relays at Bucknell University in March, said of the distance record. “That was all I was going through my head all day at school.”

Zolner isn’t about to declare distances her new strength, but it was an impressive start.

“She actually approached me early in the season and said, ‘Coach, I want to try some distance this year,’ ” Dallas coach Romayne Mosier said. “She’s been working a little on distance at practices over the past few weeks and she’s been showing some promise.

“I figured I’d throw her in to see what she could do. She is a person, who if she sets her mind to something, she goes after it. She said, ‘I’m going to get the school record.’ ”

Zolner turned in one of many impressive performances as Dallas swept all 12 events.

Maddie Hurst won two individual and one relay event while Amanda Cheshire and Krista Vivian won an individual and two relays.

The Dallas boys also put on a show in the opener.

Porter Luksic led a 118-38 win by the Mountaineers, who captured last season’s District 2 title and came within points of an unbeaten, championship season in the WVC that they will be a prime threat to track down this season.

“They’re excited,” Mosier said. “They want to do well.

“They don’t want to drop the ball. They want to keep the streak going.”

Luksic won two individual events and two relays while Mikal Krochta won one individual and all three relays.

Troy Reinert and Jared Krawetz each had one individual and two relay victories.
