When the King’s College football team opens the 2015 season, history will take place when the Monarchs host their first-ever home night game of the modern era. King’s will play its season opener Saturday, Sept. 5 with a 6 p.m. matchup with non-conference opponent Moravian College at McCarthy Stadium in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King’s, which played football from 1946 to 1963 before discontinuing the sport, did play home night games, most notable at Kingston and Meyers high schools. Since football was reinstated in 1993, however, the Monarchs have never hosted a night game. The contest will, in fact, serve as the first night game on a King’s-owned field.

Since the construction of Monarch Fields, later renamed the Robert Betzler Athletic Complex, King’s facility did not have lights. In 2008, when a new synthetic turf surface was installed, King’s added lights to the field, which was renamed McCathy Stadium. But from 2008 through 2014, King’s did not play a home football night game. The college, did however, host numerous night games in soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse during that time.

“We are very excited to be kicking off our 2015 season under the lights,” Knarr stated. “There is something special about playing at night. There is a higher level of energy and excitement from the players and fans that creates an unbelievable atmosphere for a college football game. Our players and staff are very excited about hosting the first night game in the modern era of King’s Football and we believe the campus community as well as the local community will get behind it and make it something memorable.”
