Zapoticky off to a strong start

Shippensburg University sophomore quarterback Ryan Zapoticky, a former Dallas standout, was named the inaugural Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday morning after guiding the Red Raiders to a convincing 64-14 victory over Seton Hill on Saturday at Seth Grove Stadium.

Zapoticky, making his second collegiate start, completed 15 of 26 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran a team-high 13 times for 59 yards. He played three quarters, resting in the fourth, and guided the Red Raiders to 10-of-14 third-down conversions and another on fourth down.

One of Zapoticky’s best throws of the day came midway through the second quarter when he evaded a blitz, stepped up in the pocket and threw a 38-yard touchdown strike to Sheldon Mayer that enhanced the Red Raiders lead to 20-7 with 6:18 left in the first half.

Zapoticky’s pocket presence was keen. Four times on third down, Zapoticky was able to use his feet to move the chains. Just three plays before the touchdown to Mayer, as Zapoticky kept the drive alive by running for 12 yards on a third-and-10 play.

Shippensburg totaled 536 yards on the day and scored on all five of its trips into the red zone. Six of its eight touchdown drives lasted seven or more plays.
