EDWARDSVILLE – Trailing by seven midway through the third quarter, Wilkes University rattled off 12 unanswered points, including the go-ahead touchdown with 2:14 left in the game, and held strong on defense on a late Delaware Valley surge to stun the Aggies 12-7 in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for both squads Friday night at Schmidt Stadium.

It marked the first win for the Colonels against Delaware Valley since the 2007 season when Wilkes won 27-24 in Doylestown. Wilkes’ last victory over the Aggies at home came in 2006 when the Colonels went undefeated in MAC play posting a 14-7 win over DVU.

Wilkes cut the lead to 7-6 midway through the third quarter when Ryan Dailey hit tight end Garrett Armstrong for a 7-yard touchdown, capping off a 10-play, 72 yard drive. The extra point attempt went wide left.

The teams traded possessions before Wilkes began its game-winning drive. Wilkes used the run and pass to move the ball into Aggie territory, including Dailey’s 6 for 6 performance through the air during the final drive. Facing a second-and-19 from the DVU 24, Dailey connected with Jacob Brook, who rumbled through Aggie defenders and into the end zone, putting the Colonels up 12-7 with just over two minutes left.

Wilkes tried for the two-point conversion, but a Dailey pass went incomplete.

From there it was the Wilkes defense that stood tall as DVU used nine plays and two costly Wilkes penalties to move the ball down to the Colonel 14 with 14 seconds left. Three incomplete passes and pressure on the quarterback gave Wilkes the victory as time expired on the DVU drive.
