Stephanie Mazurek, Lily Nowak and Sofia Losen won their singles matches without surrendering a game as Hazleton Area defeated Crestwood, 4-1, in girls tennis action. With the win, the Cougars have won the Wyoming Valley Conference overall team championship.

The doubles team of Emily Shiplett and Morgan Novosel picked up the only win of the night for Crestwood.

Wyoming Seminary 5, Dallas 0

Jacqui Meuser, Megan Obeid and Abby Capin picked up wins in singles action and the doubles teams of Megha Sarada, Emily Laurore and Kelsey Kayton, Meghna Melkote also won their matches which allowed Wyoming Seminary to sweep Dallas.

Wyoming Area 4, Tunkhannock 1

Kierstin Grillo, Anna Thomas and Lauren Perry all scored wins in singles matches while the doubles team of Emily Cheskiewicz and Lea Getz also won to help Wyoming Area defeat Tunkhannock.

Emiy Chesirer and Steph Seweal picked up the only win of the night for the Tigers.

VOLLEYBALL

GAR 3, Lake-Lehman 2

GAR defeated Lake-Lehman in a five-game match, 13-25, 26-24, 25-15, 18-25 and 15-11. Erin Scafella had 10 service points, nine digs, five aces and five kills, Alicia Campbell tallied 15 assists, seven digs and seven service points and Breonna Hanahan added 13 digs, five service points and four kills to lead the Grenadiers.

Coughlin 3, Hazleton Area 2

Walkiria Perez provided 13 digs, nine assists, six aces and six assists while Mykayla Time had 13 digs, 11 assists, four service points and three blocks as the Crusaders defeated Lake-Lehman. Games scores were: 25-13, 14-25, 25-17, 19-25 and 15-11.

Hazleton Area was led by Lauren Merrick who had eight kills and five blocks.

Wyoming Valley West 3, Hanover Area 0

Audi Welles led the way for the Spartans with 22 service points, 10 aces and two kills as the team swept Hanover Area. Tessa Johns had eight service points, three aces and an assist while Samantha Owens added three kills and a block for Wyoming Valley West.

Paige Jaslar recorded four digs, three service points and two aces to lead Hanover Area.

Pittston Area 3, Dallas 1

Pittston Area defeated the Mountaineers via game scores of, 25-20, 24-26, 25-15 and 25-11. Anna McDermott had 19 service points, eight aces and eight kills while Kristen Durling provided 25 assists, nine aces and six kills.

Marley O’Brien added 12 kills and Adriana Alvarado tallied 10 service points and five aces to further help Pittston Area to the win.

Misericordia women’s soccer player Alex Gallagher has been named the MAC Freedom Offensive player of the week for the second time this year.

Gallagher scored two goals, including an overtime winner, in a 2-0 week for the Cougars.

CROSS COUNTRY

Bolton named MAC Runner of the Week

Misericordia women’s cross country standout Bianca Bolton has been named the MAC Runner of the Week. Bolton finished second overall at the Lehigh Paul Short Run in a 5K race against a field of 328 runners.

Her time of 22:08 was the third-fastest time in school history. Bolton led the Cougars to a second-place team finish among 43 teams.

Surdy Named MAC field hockey Offensive Player of the Week

Wilkes field hockey sophomore forward Marissa Surdy was named the MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 3.

Surdy led the Lady Colonels to a 2-0 week, recording 14 points in two games. She scored three goals and added an assist in a 4-0 win at Immaculata University on Tuesday, and added two goals and three assists in a victory over MAC Freedom foe DeSales University at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday.

This is the first time this season Surdy has been named POW and the second time in her career.

Tedik named field hockey Defensive Player of the Week

King’s junior Paige Tedik has been named the Field Hockey Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom “Defensive Player of the Week”.

Tedik, a Coughlin High School graduate, helped King’s record a 2-0 victory in their only game of the week against defending MAC Freedom Champion FDU-Florham. The Monarchs were outshot 15-8 in the game and Tedik had six saves to preserve the shutout. Two of Tedik’s saves came in the final 1:30 of the game off shots created from penalty corners.

The King’s defense was also able to contain the Devils’ Kim Davis to just five total shots and just one on goal. Davis entered the game as the leading goal scorer in the conference and was 16th in the nation.
