HANOVER TWP. — Seems like Tuesday’s game was played before.

Haylee Bobos gives Hanover Area a first-inning lead. Meghan Armstrong rallies Holy Redeemer with a two-run single.

Yep, the same thing happened for the most part back on April 13 when the teams met. And the outcome was the same, albeit by a different margin of victory.

Redeemer shook off Bobos’ two-run blast and took control for an 11-2 victory that clinched at least a tie for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 softball title.

Redeemer (10-0), which has won 46 consecutive WVC Division 3 games, needs another win or a loss by Hanover Area (8-2) to win its fourth consecutive divisional crown. Redeemer has Wyoming Seminary on Thursday and MMI Prep on May 18. Neither team scored against the Royals in meetings earlier this season.

Hanover Area is the only team to have a lead on Redeemer in WVC competition this year. Back on April 13, Bobos hit a three-run homer in the first inning only to see Redeemer comeback for an 8-3 victory.

Bobos cracked a two-run shot in the first inning Tuesday, but the Royals tied the score in the second on Armstrong’s two-run single.

“Basically, it felt like the same thing,” Redeemer coach Jerry Paulukonis said. “But the kids battled back. They know it’s not over in the first inning.”

By the third inning — just like last time — Redeemer was wrestling away control. Brittany Hebda had an RBI single that also scored another run on an error. Another run scored, making it 5-3, when Armstrong’s routine flyball was dropped when two Hawkeyes collided.

Errors were a big problem throughout for Hanover Area. The Hawkeyes made 10 in all and it didn’t take coach Kathy Healey to declare the game her team’s worst defensive showing of the season.

“Absolutely,” Healey said. “And it’s all staying confident and making the play. That’s it and working harder at practice. We have to put the ball in play, too.”

After Bobos’ homer, Hanover Area managed just three hits and struck out 12 times against starter Kristen Coffay and reliever Morgan Bienkowski. Bienkowski caused more damage with a three-run double in the fifth. Olivia Mennig added an RBI single in the inning to push the lead to 9-2.

Tiana Wren added a two-run homer to right-center in the seventh to cap Redeemer’s scoring.

Wren and Armstrong are new to the lineup, replacing players who helped Redeemer win the PIAA Class 2A state championship last year.

“I played with most of the girls on the team through travel ball,” said Wren, a freshman who has five home runs this year. “So it was just really getting in the box, and focusing on what I have to do to help my team out.”

Redeemer’s only losses this season were in exhibition play — 4-3 to Nanticoke and 7-4 to Valley View. The Royals will get tested this weekend when they head to Williamsport for a tournament.

“We’re not playing to our full caliber yet,” said Armstrong, a junior who transferred from Nanticoke. “I know when it comes time for playoffs we’ll be there. We’ll be ready.”
