Nick Matson hit two homers, including a grand slam, and finished with eight RBI as Nanticoke defeated Duryea 14-1 in four innings Monday in District 16 Major Baseball action.

Matson was also the winning pitcher, striking out eight. Bryan Keegan added a homer for Nanticoke, which improved to 2-0 in pool play.

Derek Cease had a double and two RBI and scored three times. Deyn Sura doubled and Owen Brown had two hits.

Also with hits for Nanticoke were Caleb Butczynski, Charlie Casey, Ethan Egenski, Trevor Kruczek, Colin Mackiewicz and Justin Spencer.

Drew O’Malley doubled in a run for Duryea (0-2). Jeremy Cawley, David Behn and Ryan Zapko all had singled.

Pittston Twp. 11, Pittston City 5

Aidan Mehall threw a two-hitter and was 2 for 4 at the plate for Pittston Township (1-1).

Anthony Cencetti, Sean Connors, Brayden Powers and J.J. Walsh were multiple hitters for Pittston Township.

Devin Merkart and Ozzie Dobrowski hit home runs for Pittston City (0-1).

Plains 9, Hanover 1

Plains’ Hurler Matt Martin sat down 10 Hanover batters in four innings. He helped his cause with three hits and an RBI.

John Bush and Connor Kane had two hits. Andrew Smigiel drove in two RBI on two hits.

Jake Zola and Lane Harvey doubled for Hanover. Aiden Rutt doubled in the team’s lone run. Jacob Mercadante had a single.

DISTRICT 31

MAJOR BASEBALL

Back Mtn. National 10,

Harveys Lake 0

4 inn.

Ty Federici and Will Youngman combined to throw a no-hitter as National opened pool play with a win.

National had a balanced attack at the plate with two hits and a triple off the Evan Zawadzki’s bat. Federici added a solo home run.

Back Mtn. American 11,

Swoyersville 1

4 inn.

American’s Bryce Chopyak doubled and scored in all three plate appearances. Austin Finarelli had a three-run home run, and Logan Paczewski went 2 for 3 with a double as American improved to 2-0.

Swoyersville (0-1) tacked on its lone run in the second inning. Tyler Casterline reached on a single and scored via a Mike Kovel sacrifice fly.

Wyo./West Wyoming 11,

Northwest 1

4 inn.

Owen Hizynski and Jayden Rusyn each produced two hits for Wyoming/West Wyoming. Nick Elko did not allow an earned run in four innings on the mound.

Northwest’s Chase Miller had a pair of hits.

West Pittston 12, West Side 0, 4 inn.

Blaise Sokach was 4 for 4 with three homers for West Pittston. J.J. Hood was 4 for 4 with two homers.

Nick Ross finished 3 for 4 and Jason Wiedl was 2 for 2. Max Rosen pitched the victory.

Anthony Sabecky and Nick Giza each had a hit for West Side.

DISTRICT 31

MAJOR SOFTBALL

Back Mountain 15,

Harveys Lake 0 (5 inn.)

Morgan Sakulich helped Back Mountain win a district championship with a grand slam.

Summer Zier-Norris tabbed two singles. Kaci Hackenberg hit a triple and a double. Abby Jayne struck out three for a complete game victory.

Sisters Hanna and Hailey Kline registered singles for Harveys Lake.

Back Mountain and District 16 champ Nanticoke will play in the Section 5 tournament July 5-9.

DISTRICT 16

SENIOR BASEBALL

Pittston Area 16, Plains 5

Pittston Area advanced to the championship with a complete-game shutout by Dominic Stella. Stella, Kyle Ralston and Colton Zafuto posted multiple hits.

Plains received hits from Noah Stankinas and Matt Zalaffi.

LEGION BASEBALL

Swoyersville 4, Mountain Post 1

Zack Kibusky held Mountain Post to one earned run with four strikeouts.

Justin Montalvo had two hits for Swoyersville. His brother Josh Montalvo went 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored.

Mountain Post’s Justin Darden batted 3 for 3. John Kehl hit a double.

Tuesday’s game between Swoyersville and Wilkes-Barre is moved to Spartan Stadium in Kingston.

Penn State to meet Auburn in 2021-22

Penn State Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour and Auburn Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs announced on Monday, the first-ever regular season meeting between the two traditional football powers, set for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The Tigers will visit Beaver Stadium on Sept. 18, 2021 and the Nittany Lions will travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium on Sept. 17, 2022. The teams have met twice before in bowl games, with Penn State posting a 43-14 win in the 1996 Outback Bowl and Auburn earning a 13-9 victory in the 2003 Capital One Bowl.

Barbour also announced Penn State will host Buffalo on Sept. 7, 2019 and Ball State on Sept. 11, 2021. The Nittany Lions and Bulls will be meeting for the fourth time, while Penn State and Ball State will be playing for the first time. The Nittany Lions’ football schedules are complete through the 2019 season.
