Tyler Yankoski struck out 13 batters over eight innings Saturday and Ryan Hogan drove home three runs as Swoyersville stormed past Mifflinburg 7-3 in the opening round of the Region 5 American Legion baseball playoffs at Scranton’s Connell Park.

Yankoski worked around four errors to hold Mifflinburg to three runs on six hits, then gave way to Eric Raitter, who closed out the game in the ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Swoyersville built a 6-1 lead after five innings with help from two hits and three RBI from Hogan. Cade Flanley and Richard Sott also finished with two hits while Justin Montalvo and Mark Baron both drew two walks for Swoyersville, the Wyoming Valley regular-season champion which drew a bye through the league tournament.

Tunkhannock, the Wyoming Valley’s No. 2 representative which won the league playoffs, faced Line Mountain later Saturday at Connell Park.

Both Swoyersville and Tunkhannock will play in a second-round game Sunday. The double-elimination Region 5 Legion tournament continues through Wednesday in Scranton.
