Wilkes field hockey began its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom season with a 1-0 win at DeSales University on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Marissa Surdy scored the game’s lone goal in the 39th minute with an assist from sophomore Meghan Kane.

DeSales attempted to clear the ball out of the circle, but senior Maura Anistranski was able to push the ball back inside to Kane. Before the Bulldogs goalkeeper could clear the ball, Surdy was able to put it into the net for the score.

Sophomore Dallas Kendra made six saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

FDU-Florham 3, Misericordia 1

Misericordia University fell to FDU-Florham in its MAC Freedom opener.

Suzhaunna Lerch scored MU’s lone goal on a corner with no time remaining.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Arcadia 2, Wilkes 0

Wilkes fell to 1-6 with its latest loss at Arcadia University.

The Knights scored in the 31st and 82nd minutes.

Senior Alyssa Young made one save playing the first half while freshman Kendall Koch made four saves in the second half.

Lebanon Valley 1, King’s 0

King’s continued to prep for the upcoming Freedom Conference schedule as the Monarchs dropped a narrow decision to regionally 10th-ranked Lebanon Valley College in Annville.

After a scoreless first half Lebanon Valley scored what proved to be the game winner when Rileigh Jo Evitts scored 10:30 into the second half.

LVC outshot King’s 16-5 and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. King’s goalie Jess Schenfeld made eight saves in the match.

MEN’S SOCCER

Stevenson 3, Wilkes 2

Wilkes battled back from a 2-0 first-half hole, but still lost at Stevenson University.

The Mustangs got on the board with goals in the third and 10th minutes for an early 2-0 lead.

Wilkes began to battle back in the 18th minute when senior Michael Hasbrouck scored with an assist from sophomore Camry Huff. The Colonels struck again to tie the game in the 26th minute when Huff added an unassisted goal of his own.

Stevenson scored the game winner in the 37th minute, and neither defense surrendered another goal the rest of the game.

Sophomore Tim Gallagher made six saves to keep Wilkes in the game.

Misericordia 1, Messiah 1

Misericordia earned a hard fought draw against No. 22 Messiah at Mangelsdorf Field.

Russell Hines scored with nine seconds to go in the first half to make it 1-1. Matt Smith had seven saves in goal for the Cougars.

Penn State York 2, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 1

Penn State Wilkes-Barre suffered a tough defeat at home to Penn State York. Michael Tandoh scored the only goal for PSU WB in the first half assisted by Zachariah Sao.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Misericordia finishes third

Amy Viti (23:59) led the Cougars in fourth place while Bethany Killmon (24:48), Clare Schoen (24:54) and Meredith Hartz (24:59) were 12th, 13th and 15th, respectively, at the Messiah Invitational.

Emma Federinko rounded out MU’s top five in 23rd place (25:20).

DeSales finished first with 17 points while Messiah had 65 to edge MU (67).

Johnson leads King’s at Messiah

In the women’s 6K race Johnson crossed the line in a time of 24:22.58 to finish eighth.

Morgan Albrecht was 65th overall with a time of 27:12.23 while Tara Weitz finished 83rd with a time of 28:08.66. Lauren Sterner finished in 87th place with a time of 28:19.94, Gabrielle Longchamp was 97th with a time of 28:51.52, and Elizabeth Novak was 105th in a time of 29:18.02. Irene Argiris finished 116th with a time of 30:05.56, Kristine Bentkowski was 137th with a time of 31:32.73, while Ciara Leynes and Anna Marie Beyer finished 141st and 142nd respectively with time of 31:45.89 and 31:48.59. Alexandra Evangelista crossed the line in 155th place with a time of 34:30.69 and Meredith Lastra was 162nd with a time of 44:43.00.

DeSales University, the sixth ranked team in the region, dominated the race with five of the top seven finishers for 19 points. The Monarchs were ninth with 243 points.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Siegel leads King’s at Messiah

Ben Siegel finished sixth overall out of 124 runners to lead the King’s College men’s cross country team to a fifth place finish at the Messiah Invitational on the campus of Messiah College in Grantham.

Siegel, the first non-Messiah affiliated finisher, ran the 8K course in 27:42.26 to finish sixth on the same course the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships will be held next month. Host Messiah had three runners ahead of Siegel while two members of S.W.I.F.T racing, Messiah’s alumni team, also finished ahead of Siegel. Michael Havrilla finished in 21st with a time of 28:34.17 with Nilang Suthar finishing right behind him with a time of 28:36.35. David Bors was 65th overall with a time of 30:46.52 while Andrew Martuscelli crossed the line in 83rd place with a time of 32:03.80.

Misericordia finishes second at Messiah

Sean Luzzi (28:22) finished 15th while Alex Fitch (28:26) and Trever Reed (28:26) were 17th and 18th, respectively. Zach Moody (28:40) placed 23rd and Eric Deignan (28:45) was 24th.

MU had 91 total points while Messiah topped the 11-team field with 24.

Wilkes takes 8th at Messiah

Wilkes University posted a total of 202 team points in the 8k race.

Franco Balbuena top the Wilkes finishers recording the second fastest time in school history in the 8k taking 12th place with a time of 28:03.90. Balbuena topped his personal-best time by ten seconds in the race.

Matthew Houser followed crossing the line in 39th place at 29:28.09. Kevin Singhel finished in 61st place with a time of 30:29.41 while Alan Sebastianelli took home 70th place at 31:03.98. Ryan Weber finished in 71st place at 31:05.36, Kendrick Schell in 77th place at 31:38.17, Brandon Ver-Non in 78th place at 31:41.91, Killian Sloan in 81st place at 31:47.33 and Nicholas Moullette in 82nd place at 31:48.67.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

King’s drops two at York College Invitational

King’s fell to SUNY-Canton 2-21, 25-19, 25-13. The Lady Monarchs the fell to Marietta College of Ohio 25-21, 25-13, 25-10.

Against Canton Rachel Miller had 13 kills and 12 assists while Mauree Kloap followed with six kills and 15 digs. Julie Kollar posted five kills, and 14 digs while Maddie Kumm dished out 26 assists. Kristen Bohnenblush chipped in with 14 digs.

Against Marietta, Miller registered five kills and seven digs while Kumm added 10 assists. Katelyn Shifflett, and Sydney Reigel had three kills apiece while Kollar had two kills and six digs. Emma Hanrahan chipped in with seven digs.

Misericordia drops a pair at Worthington Classic

MU fell to Gallaudet, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-23) and Marymount, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-18).

Michelle Sehested led the Cougars in the opener with 11 kills and Nicole Tagerty had 23 assists. Paige Shaughnessy had six kills and 12 digs and Kaitlin Wheeler had a team-high 14 digs.

Against Marymount, Sehested had nine kills and nine digs and Shaughnessy had six kills. Tagerty had 17 assists.

Wilkes splits tri-match

Wilkes University went 1-1 at a tri-match at Rutgers-Camden. The Lady Colonels defeated Penn State-Brandywine 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-20), before falling to Rutgers-Camden 3-0 (18-25, 18-25, 17-25).

Against PSU-Brandywine, Wilkes’ attack was led by freshman Jamey Mikovich’s 18 kills. Senior Ally Paskas finished with nine kills while junior Grace Boyle added seven kills. Sophomore Alexis Morgan led the passing game with 31 assists. On the back line, Paskas led the way with 10 digs while Boyle and sophomore Shayna Fehrle both added seven digs each.

Against Rutgers-Camden, Mikovich again led the way with nine kills while Boyle added eight and Paskas finished with five. Morgan again led the way passing with 22 assists. Freshman Juliet Betke led the back line with 20 digs. Boyle added nine while Paskas contributed seven.
