The Wyoming Valley Mushroom Club will hold its monthly meeting for July at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 17 on the Nanticoke campus of Luzerne County Community College. The exact location is Room 105 in the Advanced Technology Center, which is found on the lower part of the campus. Use the main entrance for the ATC, which leads to a wide stairway used to access the lower level of the building. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the ATC.

The North Mountain Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association will hold a field day on July 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sorber Mountain Cabin, 650 Sorber Mtn. West Road on Noxen. A QDMA picnic will follow from noon to 2 p.m. The field day and picnic are free to the public. The topic for the field day will be Planting a Food Plot.

The branch will also hold a Kid’s Habitat Day from July 16-18. Cost is $5 per day. For more information call Chip Sorber at 570-477-2303.

Pheasants Forever Chapter 803 will hold its second annual Field Gun Challenge on Saturday, July 25 at Rock Mountain. Information can be found at nepapf.org or by calling Chris Traver Sr. at 570-477-4668. Register before July 13 and save $15.

The Northeast Pennsylvania Pheasants Forever Chapter 803 is an organization striving to make a difference for all wildlife by helping creating habitat in Luzerne, Lackawanna and Wyoming Counties. Here are a few accomplishments:

* 56 youth members have participated in the Youth Mentored Hunt in 2013, over 500 youth have participated since 2006. This is held on State Game lands 119, Bear Creek.

* Since 2006, the organization has completed hundreds of acres habitat work in Luzerne, Lackawanna and Wyoming Counties

* The following equipment has been purchased: 4×4 tractor with loader, no-till planter, six foot heavy duty tiller, boom sprayer, backpack sprayers, Stihl chainsaw, Stihl Kombi System, equipment trailer and a 6 foot brush hog that are used to create and retain habitat for wildlife.

* 13,000+ pounds of habitat seed is distributed yearly for habitat and food plots throughout NEPA.

100 percent of dollars raised are retained by the Chapter for Luzerne, Lackawanna and Wyoming Counties.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission will host an educational program on river otters. The program will be held Tuesday, July 28 at 7 p.m. at the Northeast Region Office in Dallas. Game Commission furbearer biologist Tom Hardisky will present information on the history of river otters in Pennsylvania, their biology and behavior, population-monitoring efforts, species management, and regulated harvest opportunities.
