WILKES-BARRE ?? Working 9 to 5 resulted in felony drug charges filed against 22 people Friday.

Another 10 alleged drug users were charged with possession of drugs or paraphernalia.

Authorities on Friday announced ??Operation Square Deal,? a five-month investigation that targeted illegal drug sales in the area of Public Square and East Market Street and the first block of South Main Street, the heart of the city??s business district.

??These drug dealers were coming into downtown to conduct their business mostly between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.,? Mayor Tom Leighton said during a news conference inside Wilkes-Barre Police Headquarters.

Missing Friday afternoon after the early morning sweep by police and drug agents were the loiterers at Public Square and East Market Street that became a daily occurrence. Leighton said the loitering caused his office to be ??flooded? with complaints.

Police Chief Gerard Dessoye credited patrol officers with initiating Operation Square Deal and praised the Hawkeye Security Surveillance cameras in recording alleged hand-to-hand drug and money transactions.

??What was unique about this investigation, it wasn??t an investigation that was started by my senior drug investigators,? Dessoye said. ??This was a patrol-initiated investigation.?

??Officers of the Wilkes-Barre Police Department put in a lot of hard work on this, especially from the patrol division,? said police Sgt. Matt Stash, head of the city??s VIPER unit. ??A few aggressive patrol officers took the time to stop and identify these suspects. Through their hard work their final effort is a couple dozen drug dealers in jail.?

Authorities began arresting suspected drug dealers at about 7 a.m. targeting 14 properties in Wilkes-Barre, and one each in Edwardsville, Kingston and Hanover Township.

Stash said drug sales at Public Square and East Market Street took place within a school zone, noting Wilkes-Barre Area??s Coughlin High School is less than 1,000 feet from the corner. The area is also within eyesight of police headquarters.

A person convicted of selling illegal drugs in a school zone faces at least a two-year state prison sentence, according to the state crimes code.

??Sgt. Stash and his two officers assisted by several aggressive patrol officers who were sick of seeing this in (Public) Square put this together,? Dessoye said. ??Most of these officers had contact with most of these individuals at one time or another and said, ??This isn??t doing anything, arresting one today, one tomorrow or another next week.?? We needed to put this together in a concentrated operation and we needed a clean sweep, to purge the drug dealers off the Square.?
