(AP) Government officials say a major auto tunnel that was flooded by Superstorm Sandy and is one of New York City's last closed thoroughfares will soon reopen to traffic.
The two officials say Gov. Andrew Cuomo will make the announcement about the former Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel on Tuesday afternoon. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official announcement was hours away.
The tunnel was recently renamed the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel. It carries auto traffic from Brooklyn to Manhattan and was swamped by Sandy's storm surge.
Cuomo has used the tunnel repeatedly as an example of the severity of the storm. He had said Sunday the tunnel would be open this week for rush-hour bus service only.
