YATESVILLE — At 6-foot-10, 330 pounds, GAR’s Christian Skrepenak is the biggest guy in Wyoming Valley Conference boys basketball.
Yet, point guard James Holmes just smiled when he admitted there are nights they can’t find him.
Friday night wasn’t one of them.
Skrepenak made all six of his shots in the first half and finished with a game-high 23 points as GAR routed Holy Redeemer 74-45 in a District 2 Class 3A quarterfinal game at Pittston Area High School.
The second-seeded Grenadiers (16-8) will play third-seeded Crestwood (17-7) in the semifinals on Tuesday at a site and time to be announced. Seventh-seeded Redeemer ended its run at 10-14.
“We were looking for him a little more,” Holmes said, “because he had an advantage on them with height down low.”
Then Holmes admitted it always isn’t like that.
“Sometimes we just miss him.”
With Skrepenak dominating inside and Redeemer struggling from the field, GAR took a 16-5 lead after one quarter.
Holmes and Isaiah Francis took the spotlight in the second quarter. Holmes fired in three three-pointers, his last helping the Grenadiers to a 35-18 halftime lead. Francis scored six of his 11 points in the second, including his obligatory slam dunk.
“Offensively, we had a very good team effort tonight,” GAR coach Paul Brown said. “The kids moved the ball around. It looked like their prime target was to get the ball into Christian. With more ball movement to stretch the zone out a little bit, we were able to get some passes down to him.”
Redeemer put some suspense into the game early in the third with four consecutive points to move within 35-22. GAR dashed the Royals’ hopes by scoring the next six.
John Kane paced the Royals with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.
