(AP) The hospital that's treating famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer says the 104-year-old has gotten worse.

Rio de Janeiro's Samaritano Hospital says Niemeyer is suffering from kidney failure, aggravated by a bout of digestive hemorrhaging, which has been brought under control.

In a statement Monday, the hospital said he is now breathing with the aid of machines, although he remains lucid.

Niemeyer was hospitalized on Nov. 2 after a cold he caught several weeks ago led to dehydration, which compromised his kidneys. After steadily getting better, Niemeyer took a sudden turn for the worse last week when he experienced a bout of digestive hemorrhaging.

Niemeyer designed much of Brazil's futuristic capital Brasilia, as well as Rio's Sambadrome, where the city's annual carnival parade is held.
