WILKES-BARRE ‚?? Sometimes it‚??s best to forget and move on, like Hanover Area‚??s Jorge Colon did Friday night.

After launching and missing an unexpected three-pointer in overtime, the junior point guard sank two free throws with 22.6 seconds left to give the Hawkeyes a 53-52 victory over Holy Redeemer in the McGrane Boys Basketball Tournament championship game.

Colon was also named the tournament MVP for his two-game effort. He had 18 a night earlier against Pittston Area and 21 against Redeemer. The final two points came from the foul line after he was sandwiched trying to drive the left side.

Prior to the free throws, Redeemer (1-7) turned over the ball with 56 seconds left. Instead of running time off the clock, Colon came down court and fired a three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining that missed the mark.

‚??I saw the opening and want to trust myself in those situations,‚?Ě Colon said. ‚??I just felt confident in that shot. I know it didn‚??t go in, but hey, you can‚??t make every shot.‚?Ě

The Hawkeyes (4-5) were fortunate Redeemer didn‚??t make any, either, the rest of the way. The Royals failed on three foul shots, then missed two field goals in the final five seconds of overtime.

Hanover Area also had two other players named to the all-tournament team, Jake Barber and Bob Kerestes. Barber led all scorers with 22 points. Kerestes added a team-high nine rebounds.

The victory was Hanover Area‚??s first over the Royals in school history. The Hawkeyes had lost the prior five meetings. It was also their fourth in their last six games. They started last season by losing seven of their first nine games.

‚??We‚??re young. We start three sophomores,‚?Ě Hanover Area coach Steve Harnischfeger said. ‚??I hope we‚??re turning the corner.‚?Ě

Hanover Area was shaky at times, especially when Colon was on the bench twice in foul trouble. However, the Hawkeyes never let Redeemer‚??s press cause much trouble in those segments.

‚??They pulled through and that just made me happy and more of a team player,‚?Ě Colon said. ‚??It‚??s all about my team. It was a great team effort. We played together and pulled through. It was a big game for us.‚?Ě

Redeemer, though, rallied to tie the score twice in the fourth quarter. The final time came on Lenny Radziak‚??s three-pointer that tied the game 48-48 at the end of regulation.

‚??They took it to us,‚?Ě Harnischfeger said. ‚??We just fought back, plain and simple. It was a dogfight, but we got lucky and came out on top.‚?Ě

Shachel Wallace paced Redeemer with nine points and 12 rebounds. He was selected to the all-tournament team along with Lake-Lehman‚??s Adam Dizbon and Pittston Area‚??s Mason Gross. Redeemer‚??s Brian Banas was presented the sportsmanship award. He finished with a team-high 11 points.
