For the last several years, the District 2 Championships have been held at two separate locations, spilt up by classifications.

It may not be long until Class 2A and 3A are united into one building. There had been talk in past years that if a high school gym was big enough, the tourneys could come together. But nothing ever happened.

Now, there have been discussions to work on the matter. At the Oct. 17 District 2 meeting, the District 2 wrestling committee made the rest of the district committee members aware that the Kingston Armory was looked at as a potential site for an upcoming tournament. The sites for the 2013 championships are Hazleton Area (Class 3A) and Lake-Lehman (2A), so this is possibly for the 2013-14 campaign.

We're very fortunate to have schools host our events, but it would be a goal of ours to get both classifications together, District 2 Wrestling Chairman Jay Starnes said. That would be awesome for the sport, the wrestlers and the fans. It's a great tradition there in Wilkes-Barre, and the Armory and the scene would be a great facility for that.

The tradition Starnes refers to is that the Armory once hosted several wrestling events and was the site for the PIAA Championships in 1947 and 1948. District 11, a powerhouse in wrestling, has had both classifications at the same location for years. In District 2, the duals championship finals are held at the same time and location.

The district tournaments always display the top talent in all of D2, no matter which venue you're attending. In Tuesday's sports section, the returning state qualifiers were highlighted.

Here are other wrestlers to keep an eye on for the 2012-13 season.

Top returning regional qualifiers

Justin Elick, Meyers: A senior, he's always shown promise dating back to his freshman season. Last year, he displayed that on a higher stage, taking fourth at regionals.

Matt Hammerstone, Crestwood: Picking up his first district title last year, the senior was a regional semifinalist and lost a tough one in the semis by one point.

Angelo Lussi, Pittston Area: The senior burst onto the scene last year as district runner-up and a regional semifinalist, ending the season with 24 wins.

A.J. Luton, GAR: As a sophomore last season, he took third at districts and then made it to the state qualifying match at regionals, where he finished fourth.

Larry Romanchik, Hazleton Area: Now a sophomore, he won a district title last year and was a regional semifinalist, compiling 24 wins.

Derrick Simms, Wyoming Valley West: A senior, he was in a similar situation to Hammerstone last year at regionals advancing to the semis before losing a heart-breaker. He was also a district champion.

Under the radar

Every year, one or two wrestlers come out of nowhere to make a run at a WVC or District 2 title. All of these grapplers named here were regional qualifiers at one point in their career, except for the Tunkhannock freshman.

So they may not be under the radar, but have potential to break through this season.

Zac Faust, GAR, sophomore; Nick Heck, Wyoming Area, senior; Kevin Laubach, Berwick, senior; Carm Mauriello, Wyoming Area, senior; Johntae Nelson, Meyers, junior; Dalton Ray, Tunkhannock, freshman.
