MOUNTAIN TOP ‚?? Crestwood School District sent out alerts to parents this afternoon assuring them the district is being proactive in the wake of rumors of a planned school shooting, rumors that have been investigated and proven to be unfounded.

In an email, Superintendent Dave McLaughlin-Smith said ‚??In an attempt to be proactive and belie any undo negative reaction to a rumor we investigated, the Crestwood School District used the Skylert (and Skyward) system to alert our community.‚?Ě He also noted the district is working closely with local police and ‚??as they have always done, our local police will have a presence on our campuses.‚?Ě

The rumors seemed to be a conflation of discussion among several people about the claim that ancient Mayans predicted the world will end Friday and a ‚??shooter threat‚?Ě at an unspecified school. The doomsday claim itself ‚?? which stems from calculations that Friday marks the last day of an Mayan calendar spanning five millennia ‚?? has been widely debunked, but it has prompted similar problems in schools in other areas. Several Michigan schools have started their winter break a few days early because of persistent rumors of potential threats to students.
