Luke, I am your teacher. Join me, and together we can rule the school district.
Ok, maybe not, but while Darth Vader is definitely going to Disney World, George Lucas has promised the bulk of proceeds from the sale of his film company to Disney - at a price tag of $4.05 billion - will go toward education philanthropy, which prompted EdWeek to ask the obvious question: Where, exactly, into education? (not sure if you need to subscirbe, they frequently offer free access).
The report by Katie Ash notes Lucas has been big on ed for decades, establishing the George Lucas Educational Foundation in 1991, manifested most prominently in Edutopia, which bills itself as a source for what works in education.
The EdWeek article speculates that Lucas may fund tech ed innovation matching his own success in pioneering digital filmaking to the point of having a property worth $4 billion. My favorite quote came from LeiLani Cauthen, Veep of the Center for Digital Education, who played off the popular eduspeak acronym STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
It is my firm belief that education's primary charter for the next 20 years needs to be not justs STEM, but STEAM [STEM subjects plus Art]
Being a supporter of the value of art education, I say full STEAM ahead.
At this point, no one knows what Lucas has planned, or even how much money those plans will get from the Disney deal. Mmmm, Cloudy the future is.
But have fun speculating... Stormtrooper ROTC at Wilkes ... How to make the movie The Sith Sense ... Jabba-cize PE classes ...
Just keep Jar Jar Binks out of it.
