District 2 tourneys to resume

High school playoff action appears to be returning today, as District 2 announced new dates for its ongoing playoff tournaments Tuesday.

Hurricane Sandy forced the cancellation of games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in boys and girls soccer, as well as girls volleyball play Monday and Tuesday.

Boys and girls soccer will resume Thursday with semifinal games in all three classes. Championship games in all six brackets will be played Saturday at sites and times to be determined.

Girls volleyball is expected to resume Wednesday night. That tournament is still facing logistical issues, as Delaware Valley High School did not have power as of Tuesday afternoon.

At this point, Class 2A action is set with a quarterfinal doubleheader at Nanticoke tonight (Crestwood vs. Lake-Lehman, followed by Dallas vs. Nanticoke), as well as a match at Holy Redeemer (against Tunkhanock). The last quarterfinal, between North Pocono and Western Wayne, will be played Thursday at 6 p.m. at North Pocono. Class 2A semifinals are scheduled for Friday at a site to be determined.

Class A will have its semifinal doubleheader at Dunmore on Wednesday. MMI Prep is the only WVC team in the draw.

In Class 3A, semifinals (Abington Heights vs. Hazleton Area and Delaware Valley vs. Wyoming Valley West) are set for Delaware Valley on Thursday.

Finals in all classes will be Saturday at North Pocono, with Class A opened the tripleheader at 3 p.m., followed by Class 2A at 5 p.m. and Class 3A at 7 p.m.

A number of contingency plans have been lined up in the event of continued issues caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Field hockey championships in both classes were moved from Tuesday to Thursday when the matchups were determined last week. Crestwood plays Wyoming Seminary for the District 2 Class 2A title at 5 p.m. at Spartan Stadium, with both teams advancing to states. Coughlin and Honesdale meet at 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium with the winner going into the state Class 3A bracket.

Friday's PIAA girls tennis championships are still on schedule at this point. Action starts 9 a.m. Friday for the two-day event. Wyoming Seminary's Nathalie Joanlanne, a sophomore, is entered as the District 2 Class 2A champion. Her first round match will be against senior Anna Spoden of York Catholic, the third-place finisher in District 3.

The state cross country championships are also still on for Saturday in Hershey. Six races are scheduled, with girls Class A kicking off the day at 9:30 a.m., followed by Class 2A and 3A in 45-minute intervals. Boys start with Class A at 11:45 a.m., with Class 2A and 3A again following in 45-minute intervals.

King's, Misericordia and Wilkes have their fall sports teams participating in the Freedom Conference championships in their respective sports. Field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball were all rescheduled from earlier in the week to Thursday.
