DUPONT – Borough council is moving forward with steps to share police services with the city of Pittston.

Dupont is currently serviced by seven part-time police officers. Municipal officials believe their emergency response capabilities would be vastly enhanced with the cooperation of Pittston's much larger police force.

The council voted to authorize borough Solicitor Eric Dingle to officially enter into discussions with Pittston city officials regarding logistics and feasibility. Council also authorized the sending of an official ‘letter of intent' to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

The letter of intent serves as the first formal step toward establishing any kind of shared municipal services agreement within the state. Regionalization has been a main focal point throughout 2012 for Dupont.

In addition to police talks with Pittston, Dupont shares ambulance services with Duryea and Avoca. It also houses a yard waste recycling unit that it jointly operates with five other Luzerne County municipalities.

In other matters, the council held its second reading of the proposed 2013 budget. Borough Manager Patricia McDonald repeated her warning from the first reading that the budget is preliminary and certain to change pending the reception of insurance quotes, expected this week.

As it is currently listed, Dupont will kick off 2013 with $54,000 in its general fund and should maintain a balanced budget throughout the year with approximately $800,000 in revenues and expenditures.

The budget will be available at the municipal building for public review for the next 10 days, but it is likely to be significantly different from what will ultimately be adopted at December's regular council meeting.

Dupont's property tax will remain at 1.2235 mills. A mill is a tax of $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value.

Council's next regular meeting is scheduled for Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
