WILKES-BARRE – Another season, another district diving title for Matt Edkins.

And his second time around seemed twice as nice.

Edkins, a sophomore for Lake-Lehman, won his second straight District 2 Class 2A boys diving title Saturday, finishing with a total of 454.65 points, ensuring he'll make a trip to his second PIAA Swimming and Diving championships in mid-March.

That feat thrilled Lake-Lehman diving coach Erin Yurko.

It is an amazing accomplishment that he has achieved, said Yurko. I couldn't be (more proud) of him and that's a big deal to be a two-time district champion, especially as a sophomore.

The PIAA District 2 Class 2A diving championships were held at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center, and featured a total of 25 divers from schools such as Pittston Area, Berwick, Lake-Lehman, Holy Redeemer, Wyoming Seminary, Abington Heights, Valley View, Meyers, Dunmore, Coughlin, Tunkhannock and Elk Lake.

The top four boys and top four girls among those divers qualified for the PIAA District 2A Diving State Championships to be held March 13 at Bucknell University. For one diver in particular, it'll be nothing new.

With the experience of having been to the state tournament already, Edkins is much more prepared and feels more confident this time.

I'm just gonna go in and try to do my very best, said Edkins.

The other boys divers who qualified for states out of District 2 are Lake-Lehman senior Dustin Zeiler, who finished fourth Saturday; Wyoming Seminary sophomore Andriy Molchanov, who attained a score of 403.60 to finish just behind Edkins; and Dallas junior Patrick Madaya, who placed third at the district event.

On the girls' side, record-breaking Kelsey Williams, a senior from Holy Redeemer, took first place with a score of 415.80 and will be going to her first state tournament.

Williams had a terrific season, breaking the school diving record three times, scoring a 280.15 at one point, and winning the Ray Willis Invitational against 3A competition in January. Making the state title will certainly be the crowning achievement on her high school career.

I'm going to be nervous because it's my first time going, said Williams. But I'll do my best and we'll see how it turns out.

Holy Redeemer diving coach Rob Jacobs said Williams was pushed hard this season, and the effort paid off.

It was a lot of hard work and I'm very proud of her, said Jacobs. She really, really put a lot of work into the season. We pushed her to a point beyond where she thought she could do, and it paid off.

Other state qualifiers for girls are Holy Redeemer freshman Riley Williams, Abington Heights junior Annie Gromelski and Berwick junior Amanda O'Kane.
