EXETER – At Tuesday's regular meeting, Borough Council voted to join the West Side Council of Governments.
Council member John Morgan, elected by the council as Exeter's voting representative for the West Side COG, touted the move as a way to increase the quality of service and availability of equipment at minimal cost to the borough.
He also noted that he and other Exeter officials had hoped to join the group of West Side communities in late 2012 but were unable to do so, as their efforts were focused on a contentious budget debate.
Betty Ann DeRoberto, the only council member to abstain from voting to join the council, declined to go into specifics, simply saying, I just don't feel that this is the right thing for our town at this time.
Council members Morgan, Denise Adams, Larry Dellegrotto, Joseph Esposito, Joseph Pisano and Thomas Shannon voted to join. Dellegrotto was elected alternate representative.
In other matters, Morgan pointed out that none of Exeter's three police cars is equipped with a functioning fire extinguisher. He said this was particularly unfortunate as borough police officers were the first to respond to a recent small fire but were unable to combat the blaze adequately.
Pisano pledged to donate three new fire extinguishers to the police department.
