HAZLETON – A father was arraigned Thursday on charges he fired two rounds from a .357 Magnum at a 19-year-old man who had a fight with his son.
Police arrested Ramon P. Diaz, 64, at his residence on North Locust Street about an hour after the alleged shooting. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and a single count of reckless endangerment. No one was injured in the shooting.
Diaz was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $75,000 bail.
According to the criminal complaint:
Police investigated gunfire in the area of Fifth and North Locust streets at about 11:10 Wednesday night. A witness reportedly heard two shots and a man running into Diaz's residence.
Police walked onto Diaz's porch and observed one sneaker. No one answered the door.
Police said Erik Feliz was later found on East Third Street wearing only one sneaker that matched the shoe on Diaz's porch.
Feliz claimed he received a text message from Diaz's son, Raul Diaz, about money he owes him. Feliz went to Diaz's house to talk to Raul Diaz and the two got into a fight causing one of Feliz's sneakers to come off his foot.
Feliz and Raul Diaz stopped fighting as Diaz came out of the house brandishing a handgun. Feliz ran around Raul Diaz and was pistol whipped by Diaz.
Feliz told police Diaz fired two rounds at him as he ran away, the complaint says.
Police returned to Diaz's residence where he allegedly attempted to place two shell casings into his pocket. A family member surrendered a loaded .357 Magnum to police, according to the complaint.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Dec. 12.
