Sophomore Jacob Baker is part of the strong group of divers with the Marist College men's swim team.

Baker, from Shavertown (Wyoming Seminary), recently jumped to the fore in Loyola's H2Ounds Invitational in Baltimore, Md. when he captured both the 1-meter (243.10) and 3-meter (262.55) to lead the Red Foxes to victories over Metro Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Loyola, St. Peter's and Iona. He beat out teammate Josh Dodway by 2.25 points in the 3-meters and earned MAAC Diver of the Week honors for his efforts.

Jacob has shown steady improvement this year, Marist diving coach Melanie Bolstad said. He is stronger and is doing more difficult dives. He has been a focused athlete and has a great work ethic.

Baker has broken 300 points in the 1-meter dive (301.15 vs. Rider) and has qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championship March 8-10 at Virginia Tech.

This year, our divers are really challenging each other in practice and in meets, Bolstad said.

Marist returns to the pool Saturday, Jan. 12 when it hosts Southern Connecticut in Poughkeepsie, NY. The MAAC Championship is set for Feb. 14-16 in Buffalo, NY. Baker finished third in the 1-meter and seventh in the 3-meter last year as a freshman.

MCLAUGHLIN WRAPPING IT UP – Will McLaughlin of Mountain Top (Wyoming Seminary) is in his final season playing with the SUNY-Fredonia men's hockey team.

McLaughlin, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound forward has just one goal this season but has nine goals and 16 assists in 69 career games for the Blue Devils, who are currently 5-8 overall and 3-5 in SUNYAC play.

Will is the epitome of a college student-athlete, coach Jeff Meredith said. He is a pre-med major who has taken his MCAT's in preparation to going to med school next year. He is a four-year letter winner in college hockey and he is a tremendous role model on our campus and in the community.

And, he can play the game as well.

Will is probably the fastest skater in the conference which says a lot, Meredith said. From the time I first recruited him he has been the most positive teammate that we could ever want.

The Blue Devils return to the ice Friday, Jan. 4 with a home game against St. Anselm in Fredonia, NY.

HEFFELFINGER COMPETING – Cory Heffelfinger is a diver with the Lafayette men's swim team. The sophomore from Drums (MMI Prep) has a new dive list for both the 1 and 3 meter events.

Cory has really improved this year, head coach Jim Dailey said. He has really come a long way. His confidence on both boards has allowed him to tackle some new dives and get them into the last three dual meets. During the winter break he will have a chance to really focus on improving and getting them ready for the (Patriot) league championships in February.

Lafayette diving coach Cindy O'Donnell also sees improvement in Heffelfinger.

Even though Cory hasn't had a lot of experience in collegiate diving, his enthusiasm, desire to improve and commitment to define his limits make him a great teammate and an asset to our team, she said.

The Leopards head to Florida on Jan. 7 for their Winter Training Trip in Plantation.

MCDANIELS QUALIFIES – Gannon sophomore Janelle McDaniels (Wyoming Valley West) finished second in the 200 breaststroke at the recent Wooster Invitational in Wooster, OH with a PSAC qualifying time of 2:27.32. The 10-college meet drew 35 swimmers in that event.

McDaniels also finished third out of 38 swimmers in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.05) to help the Lady Knights capture the team event with 1,536 points.

Janelle has improved a great deal, Nathan Walters said. She has learned how to race more effectively which continues to build her confidence. She has always been a hard worker but now is learning how to be smart in the water as well.

Gannon will compete next in the New Year's Relay Invitational Jan. 1 in Largo, FL.

GLUCHOWSKI HONORED AGAIN – Senior Kayla Gluchowski is still reaping the awards for her great season and career with the West Chester field hockey team.

But her latest honor was picked up for her off-the-field talents. Gluchowski (Crestwood) was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer All-Philadelphia area Academic team. She's a psychology major.

On the field, Gluchowski helped the 20-2 Golden Rams capture their second straight NCAA Division II title, a 5-0 triumph over UMass-Lowell. West Chester made it to the title game on Gluchowski's late goal in a 3-2 victory over Shippensburg in the semifinals. She finished the season with 13 goals and six assists for 32 points and wrapped up her career with 28 goals and 11 assists for 67 points in 75 games.

Gluchowski earned Division II All-America honors, the team selected by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. She was a second team pick as a junior. She also earned her second straight PSAC first-team award.

TELINCHO HELPS RED DEVILS – Freshman Maria Telincho of Pittston (Scranton Prep) is scoring points for the Dickinson women's swim team. She swims the 50 and 100 freestyle and with the 200 free relay for the Red Devils.

Maria is working very hard and making excellent progress, coach Paul Richards said. I feel she will develop into one of our best sprinters by the end of the season. And, she should also contribute in the 100 backstroke.

Dickinson returns to the pool Friday, Jan. 4 at the ISHOF Invitational in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

– Freshman Sarah Zerfoss (Dallas) has fit in nicely diving for the Clarion women's swim team. At the recent Zippy Invitational in Akron, OH, she finished 12th out of 31 in the 1-meter (212.15) and 16th out of 27 in the 3-meter (207.40) competing against Division I and II athletes. In a 198-102 victory over Carnegie-Mellon she finished second in the 1-meter (273.60) and second in the 3-meter (264.0). And, in the Clarion Diving Invitational, she was fourth out of 14 in the 1-meter (252.75).

Sarah is doing great, coach Mark VanDyke said. She has qualified for nationals and has been solid on both boards. Diving coach (Dave) Hrovat is very excited about her potential.
