Adam C. Welch, PharmD, MBA, BCACP, of Mountain Top, received the 2012 Pharmacist of the Year Award during the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association's 2012 annual conference at the Hilton Scranton Hotel & Conference Center. Welch serves as an associate professor at the Wilkes University Nesbitt College of Pharmacy. He is an active member of the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association as well as the American Pharmacists Association, traveling across the state delivering APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery training programs. He also serves as a grand council deputy of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, where he mentors and inspires future pharmacists. He has spent the past year as president of PPA's Board of Directors. The Pharmacist of the Year award is presented to the pharmacist who has demonstrated dedication to the profession, contributed time and effort to the various professional organizations, furthered the profession of pharmacy through community service, and embodied those qualities, which exemplify the profession.

Anthony C. Dougalas, R.Ph., was presented the Cardinal Health Generation Rx Champions Award, sponsored by the Cardinal Health Foundation, during the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association's annual conference at the Hilton Scranton Hotel & Conference Center. Dougalas, of Mountain Top, is the owner of The Medicine Shoppe in Nanticoke. He has been a PPA member since 1983 and has been a leader in drug abuse education for more than 30 years. He has worked in prisons to identify new drugs of abuse and has educated both the public and law enforcement about trends in drugs of abuse. Serving on the Governor's committee on drug abuse for several years, Dougalas has demonstrated a commitment to the mission of substance abuse education and has been a regular presenter on related topics for PPA conferences. This is the first year the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association has presented the Generation Rx Champions Award. The award honors a pharmacist who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to raising awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse among the general public and among the pharmacy community. The award is also intended to encourage educational prevention efforts aimed at patients, youth, and other members of the community.

Maxim W. Furek, MA, CADC, ICADC, recently presented two seminars at the Northeast Conference on Behavioral Health Addictive Disorders held in New Brunswick, N.J. Furek addressed the conference on Prescription Drug Abuse: A Public Health Menace and Bath Salts, Synthetic Cannabinoids and Other Current Drug Trends. The conference was held in association with the 21st Annual New Jersey Summit and the Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and The Institute for Integral Development. Furek is director of Garden Walk Recovery and columnist for Counselor, The Magazine for Addiction Professionals. He resides in Luzerne County.

Dr. Jeffrey Becker, director of vision therapy at the NeuroSensory Center of Eastern Pennsylvania, Kingston, has contributed a chapter entitled, Vision Therapy, to the recently released second edition of Cutting-Edge Therapies for Autism by Ken Siri and Tony Lyons. In the book, Becker follows the case of a boy with autism and how he responds to vision therapy. He explains how vision therapy works, the causes of visual disturbances in children with autism, and how to find a qualified eye care specialist. He also discusses his newest treatment option, Ocular Motor Therapy for the iPad.

Ralph Kovaleski, OTR/L of Pro Rehabilitation Services, Moosic, recently presented Stay Well: Personal Ergonomics to Protect You at the 14th annual Northeast Regional Occupational Health & Safety Conference. The conference was sponsored by the Susquehanna Valley Association of Pennsylvania Occupational Health Nurses at the Woodlands Inn & Resort in Plains Township. During the lecture, Kovaleski discussed ergonomic risk factors for injury and practical strategies to reduce chance of injury during daily routines.
