Free holiday dinners

• 4 to 8 p.m., today at First Baptist Church, Water Street, Pittston. For more information, call Rev. James Breese at 570-654-0283


• 12 p.m. Thursday at Forty Fort United Methodist Church, Wyoming and Yeager avenues, Forty Fort. Transportation for West Side residents only, if needed. Reservations necessary. Call the church office at 287-3840 between 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.



• 3 p.m. Thursday at Christian Missionary and Alliance Church, 317 Luzerne Ave, West Pittston. Free. Call 760-4830 for reservations.


• 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday at Community Bible Fellowship of Hazleton, 458 W. Spruce St., Hazleton. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Take-outs are preferred. Deliveries will be made in the Hazleton area and can be arranged by calling 570-436-2061 or 570-578-2753.


• 12 to 2 p.m., Thursday at Salvation Christian Center, 128 S. Sherman St., Wilkes-Barre. Call Pastor Powell at 570-820-3310 or 570-604-4310 to reserve a space and notify the center that you will be coming.


• 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Thursday The Commission on Economic Opportunity will be delivering free meals to those in need. Meals will be prepared at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre, call 826-0510 to arrange for a delivery; and St. Gabriel's Church in Hazleton, call 455-4994.


• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, 39 E. Jackson St., Wilkes-Barre.


• Theo's Metro in Kingston is also offering free meals to those in need on Thursday but reservations are now closed. The restaurant expects to serve about 250 people.


Travel information

• There will be no bus service through the Luzerne County Transportation Authority on Thursday. Normal bus schedules will resume Friday.


• For those traveling to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal or brave the shopping crowds on Black Friday, the Pennsylvania Turnpike has a Smartphone app available for Droid and iPhone users. Users can download the app, TripTalk, onto their phones to get updates on the turnpike, including backups or accidents.


• If the turnpike isn't in your travel plans, motorists can visit www.511pa.com for updated information on PennDOT roadways, or by calling 511.


Government offices

• On Thursday and Friday city halls in Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Pittston and Nanticoke will be closed.


• Check with your local municipality to see if offices are open Friday.


• The Luzerne County Courthouse and all county offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
