DALLAS: The Misericordia University Admissions Department is holding an open house for adult learners from 4-7 p.m. on Jan. 8 in Huntzinger and Alden Trust Rooms 218-219 of Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall on the upper campus. Snow date is 4-7 p.m. Jan. 9.


Prospective students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an academic adviser and speak with representatives from admissions, adult education, financial aid and faculty.


Common topics include credit transfer, credit for life experiences, financial aid eligibility, evening and weekend class schedules, certificate programs, graduate programs, online courses and the Expressway Accelerated Degree program. Expressway classes are offered in Nanticoke, Scranton and Hazleton with compressed sessions that fit into busy work and family schedules.


Master's degrees are available in education, business administration (MBA), organizational management, physician assistant, occupational therapy and nursing, along with a post-professional program for practicing therapists in occupational therapy. The university also offers certificate programs for nurse educator, geriatric care management, post-master's family nurse practitioner, post-professional pediatrics and new certificates in nuclear medicine technology and health care informatics.


Among the new majors and formats are an MBA degree and an RN-to-BSN degree that are also available online. The campus is also offering a new major in Government, Law and National Security, which prepares students for career advancement in the areas of homeland security, government and law enforcement.


The university also offers virtual open house sessions for people who cannot attend the on-campus session. The next virtual open house will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 10. PITTSTON: WVIA has launched the local portion of the PBS KIDS GO!® Writers Contest, a national competition designed to promote the advancement of children's reading skills through hands-on, active learning. The effort encourages children in grades K-3 in northeastern and central Pennsylvania to celebrate the power of creating stories and illustrations by submitting their own original stories and illustrations. The deadline for submissions to WVIA is Feb. 15, 2013.


WVIA will actively partner with schools, public libraries and other literacy organizations to implement the contest. First-place local winners from each grade will be entered into the national level of the contest where a renowned panel of judges will identify the national winners. Winners will be announced and national prizes, including tablet computers, e-readers, and MP3 players will be awarded in summer 2013.


Kindergarten and first-grade stories must have a minimum of 50 words and a maximum of 200 words. Second- and third-grade stories must have a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 350 words. The word count includes a, an and the, but not the words on non-story pages such as the title page or those that enhance the illustrations. Text must be printed or written legibly or typed. Children who cannot write may dictate their story to be printed, written legibly or typed. Text may be integrated into the illustration pages or on separate pages. Non-English text must be translated on the same page and the translated text (English text) must adhere to word count. Invented spelling is accepted.
