(AP) The son of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy is suing two New York nurses for defamation and malicious prosecution after he was acquitted of criminal charges in a maternity ward scuffle.

Douglas Kennedy says in Friday's lawsuit that the nurses' claims that he hurt them damaged his reputation and led to his prosecution.

He was acquitted in November of child endangerment and physical harassment.

The charges stemmed from Kennedy's attempt a year ago to take his newborn son from a suburban hospital. He said he wanted the 2-day-old to get fresh air.

The nurses objected and tried to block his way, then claimed he hurt them.

His wife, Molly, is also a plaintiff, alleging emotional distress.

The nurses have sued Kennedy, seeking $200,000. Their lawyer said Tuesday that Kennedy's lawsuit is baseless.
